Purpose

The Business Manager for Internal Controls ensures the success of US Internal Controls by overseeing daily operations and collaborating with key functional areas such as Internal Controls, Compliance, Finance, Risk, Legal, Operations, IT, Regulatory Relations, and Data Governance. This role ensures business strategies and initiatives comply with regulations, policies, and procedures.

This position adds value to the executive team by providing expertise in daily business activities and ensuring effective governance, procedures, and processes. It also involves leading and influencing discussions within Scotiabank and with external stakeholders, including industry forums and regulatory bodies.

What You’ll Do

Business Management :

  • Oversee daily operations in partnership with Internal Controls and key support functions.
  • Manage employee onboarding / offboarding, including seating plans, equipment needs, and shared folder access.
  • Coordinate and complete ad-hoc requests from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Finance on reporting and expense management.
  • Execute the Business Continuity Plan (BCP).
  • Drive cross-functional initiatives independently.
  • Foster a client-focused culture to enhance business value and leverage broader bank relationships.

Regulatory and Controls :

  • Strengthen the control environment by promoting adherence to governance frameworks, policies, and regulations.
  • Ensure a consistent governance framework across functions and products.
  • Oversee regulatory responses, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
  • Create efficiencies in control applications while maintaining a strong framework.
  • Serve as the key contact for Compliance, Internal Control, Legal, Finance, Risk, Operations, IT, Regulatory Relations, and Data Governance teams.
  • Consider the Bank’s risk appetite and culture in daily activities and decisions.
  • Leadership & Management :

  • Lead and manage reporting and governance within the Internal Controls team.
  • Identify and implement continuous process improvements.
  • Coordinate accurate and complete policies and procedures for internal controls.
  • Prepare and present regular internal control status reports to senior management and the board.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to promote internal control awareness across the organization.
  • Consider the Bank’s risk appetite and culture in daily activities and decisions.

  • Ensure efficient operations aligned with Scotiabank’s Values, Code of Conduct, and Global Sales Principles.
  • Maintain effective day-to-day business controls to meet operational, compliance, AML / ATF / sanctions, and conduct risk obligations.
  • What You’ll Bring

  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Exceptional attention to detail, coupled with strong editing skills
  • Expert user of Microsoft Office applications, particularly : Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • High organizational and project management skills, being able to handle a large number of concurrent, high-priority activities and requests
  • Strong curiosity and research capabilities to obtain background information and insights for projects which the incumbent may or may not be thoroughly familiar with
  • Good understanding of the GTBs objectives, strategies, and structure is also required
  • Excellent relationship building skills, with the ability to build and manage stakeholder relationships across many diverse stakeholder groups (including Senior Executives)
  • Exceptional communication skills with knowledge and experience across multiple platforms (i.e., print, visual media, online, etc.), with a demonstrated ability to drive employee engagement
  • Expert time management, project management, planning and organization skills to oversee and execute on multiple complex initiatives without compromising quality.
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to work autonomously or collaboratively.
  • Proven track record in strategy development, including in-depth experience and demonstrated success in leading multi-disciplinary initiatives of varying sizes and complexity, efficiently and effectively, ensuring all elements of change are considered, understood and managed.
  • Strong organizational skills to coordinate and prioritize several concurrent projects.
  • Excellent visionary, planning and analytical skills.
  • Thorough understanding of high-quality SVP level standards in terms of presentation material and written communication.
  • The incumbent should be able to work in a fast paced and energized environment, deal with tight deadlines, solve complex problems, and balance conflicting priorities.
