Description
Under general supervision, performs skilled and technical work in operating an approved mobile medical unit, rescuing victims and administering appropriate emergency medical care to patients on-site and while in route to hospital. Work involves responding to the scene of emergency and non-emergency calls, applying necessary medical treatment to sick or injured persons under the guidance of local protocols and transporting persons to a medical facility. This position is differentiated from an Emergency Medical Technician by the additional requirements of having the ability to establish an intravenous line and administer specified solutions by intravenous infusion; performing pulmonary ventilation by means of an esophageal obturator airway or esophageal gastric tube airway. Employee must exercise tact, courtesy and firmness in dealing with sick or injured persons and with the general public. Employee is responsible for performing in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques, but must exercise considerable independent judgment in assessing the condition of patients and applying short-term relief. Employee is exposed to the normal hazards of emergency rescue work, including risk of exposure to infectious diseases. Reports to an EMS Shift Supervisor.
Examples of Duties
- Responds to emergency calls as a mobile medical unit driver or attendant, performs necessary rescue work in accordance with established protocols for Basic and Advanced Life Support.
- Participates in a continuous training program to improve competence in medical clinical work and in ambulance service and operation; maintains knowledge of new or modified operational protocols and procedures; studies street and road patterns and networks of the County in order that future runs may be made with minimum difficulty and delay.
- Maintains competency in trip report writing, computer skills and literacy; this includes Microsoft Windows operating system and software related to the Windows operating system, i.e. (Word, Excel, HER system)

Typical Qualifications
Graduation from high school; Must possess a valid driver's license; Certification as an intermediate EMT
Supplemental Information
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.
Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment, monitor work site progress, and use measurement devices.
