The primary purpose of this position is to provide medical care across a variety of areas. This position provides medical examinations, makes medical diagnoses and dispenses medical treatment, serves as a consultant to the clinical nursing staff, participates as an in-service education leader, and serves as clinical preceptor for enhanced role nursing candidates. Work may also include community outreach clinics, program evaluations, program development and program policies and procedures.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Provides Primary Care to obstetrical patients in the Maternal Health Program.Reviews and/or completes extensive patient, family, and father of the baby history.Review and evaluate the personal, family, social, sexual, reproductive and contraceptive history given by the patient to determine appropriate contraceptive methods that are safe and effective for each individual patient.Performs complete physical exam on all new and annual patients.Identifies problems on the basis of exam, history and lab work.Provides early intervention/primary care services for HIV infected patients throughout the spectrum of disease.Confirms HIV status, orders annual and periodic laboratory tests.Monitors patient viral status and initiates, modifies or continues Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART).Counsels patients on prescribed activity level, nutritional concerns, smoking cessation and other preventive health concerns.Refers to medical support services (Department of Social Services, Domestic Violence, Mental health, Prescription Assistance Program, etc.) as indicated.Serves as a consultant to nurses in the sexually transmitted disease program.Serves as a preceptor for public health nurses who take expanded role courses in Family Planning and Sexually Transmitted Disease ProgramsServes as a preceptor to public health nurses taking the adult physical assessment course.
