Under general supervision of the Assistant County Engineer, the temporary Engineering Technician provides technical support to secondary roads and bridge projects, to include conducting quality and progress inspections. Participates in construction surveying.

Job Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Inspects construction projects to ensure compliance with specifications and prepares documentation to submit to the IDOT; monitors the progress of outside contractors to ensure work meets specifications and quality standards.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties to include material testing.
  • Stakes out bridges, roads, and right-of-way for contractors and secondary roads crews.
  • Provides feedback and answers questions from County residents to ensure concerns are accurately and adequately addressed.
  • Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Standards for Initial Consideration

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines
Associate?s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, or related field; AND two (2) years of civil engineering experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge of:

  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Iowa DOT specifications and design aids.
  • Engineering design practices and principles.
  • Records maintenance and retention policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Construction materials, tools, methods, and equipment.
  • Surveying methods.
  • Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.


Skill in:

  • Reading and interpreting engineering design plans.
  • Operating a computer to include standard software and some specialized engineering and design software.
  • Conducting thorough project site inspections to identify quality issues and determine progress.
  • Maintaining accurate records.
  • Conducting research and compiling relevant data.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

Supplemental Information

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Iowa Department of Transportation certifications as an Aggregate Technician, and Level I Portland Cement Concrete Technician. Level I Hot Mix Asphalt Technician preferred. Must maintain Iowa Department of Transportation technician certifications throughout the duration of employment. Must possess a valid Driver's license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office environment and in the field at various construction project sites. While in the field may be exposed to dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, hazards associated with traffic, extreme outdoor weather conditions, and hazardous chemicals. May be required to traverse uneven terrain, climb in and out of ditches, and lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
