Optical Technicians typically work in optical facilities, optometrist/ophthalmologist offices or retail enterprises that deal in eyewear and are generally expected to:

  • Fill prescriptions from optometrists and ophthalmologists
  • Conduct basic eye examinations
  • Take customers’ eye measurements
  • Assist customers in choosing eyeglasses and frames
  • Help eye patients decide which lens types are apt for them
  • Keep customer prescriptions and records up to date
  • Track sales and manage the in-store inventory
  • Repair broken or damaged glasses and frames
  • Educate patients, customers, and store visitors about eye health and eyewear

Skilled individuals can receive entry-level positions as optical technicians, optical lab technicians or contact lens fitters. These jobs require a mix of clinical skills, manual dexterity, customer service skills, salesmanship and communication skills. Familiarity with data entry software and point of sale (POS) devices is a bonus.

A basic understanding of patient care, medical terminology, coding procedures, reference tools, and appropriate clinical pharmacology for medical assistant practice scope. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills. Familiarity with electronic medical health care record systems.

  • Receive and direct phone calls, schedule appointments, check-in patients, obtain necessary patient information to file and update patient records, and ensure all forms and consents are completed by patients
  • Check-out patients, assist with referral processing, and arrange laboratory services
  • Handle billing process
  • Prepare patients for examination, take vitals, and record patients' health history
  • Prepare equipment and examination rooms, and clean instruments
  • Assist physician with medical treatments, procedures, and exams
  • Manage inventory of medical supplies and equip exam rooms with appropriate supplies

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour
