Scott Humphrey has partnered with a well-established and rapidly growing construction company based in Houston, TX, known for delivering high-quality commercial and civil projects across the region. Our client is seeking an experienced Controller to lead the financial operations of their construction business. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in construction accounting, proven leadership experience, and hands-on expertise with Viewpoint (Vista or Spectrum). This role is critical to the company’s financial health and operational success, reporting directly to the VP of Accounting.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, Job Costing, and Payroll
- Manage monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
- Ensure accurate job costing and WIP schedules in alignment with project budgets
- Prepare and analyze financial statements and reports for senior management
- Develop and implement internal controls and financial procedures
- Coordinate with external auditors and manage year-end audits
- Support project managers and operations with financial analysis and forecasting
- Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff
- Lead implementation and optimization of Viewpoint system workflows
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred but not required)
- Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting experience, including 3 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role
- Strong understanding of construction accounting principles (GAAP, percentage of completion, etc.)
- Proficiency in Viewpoint (Vista or Spectrum) required
- Experience with Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, job cost tracking, and contract revenue recognition
- Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving ability
- Strong communication skills and leadership experience
