TITLE: Maintenance/Transportation Helper
Reports To: Director of Operations; Maintenance Supervisor; Transportation Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Terms: 240 Days - 8 Hours/Day
Evaluation: State and/or Local Evaluation Protocol
Job Goal:
To work independently, enthusiastically, and as a team member while ensuring that our facilities, grounds, and/or transportation department are maintained in an efficient and professional manner.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Be highly adaptable and willing to work during nights and holidays.
- Possess a desire to show initiative and willingness to learn.
- Possess or obtain a Class “B” CDL with “P” and “S” endorsements.
- Possess or obtain a valid Alabama School Bus Driver Certificate.
- Possess and maintain DOT medical certificate or an Alabama School Bus Driver Physical.
- Pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol test and participate in the system’s random drug/alcohol testing program.
- Such alternatives and/or exceptions to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
- Punctuality and regular attendance.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Follow directions and instructions from supervisors in a timely manner.
- Respond to breakdowns and emergencies en-route to and from the shop and after-duty hours.
- Promote high standards of safety and good housekeeping for the schools, vehicles, shops, and grounds.
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information.
- Possess and use skills associated with repair or replacement of various items in relation to the subsystems of the school plant such as carpentry, flooring, roofing, electrical, plumbing, industrial maintenance, painting, HVAC, etc.
- Possess and use skills associated with the use of hand tools, various gauges, special tools, and computer software.
- Perform outside activities such as landscape and lawn maintenance.
- Maintain and care for all lawn equipment.
- Supervise summer workers that are involved in lawn maintenance.
- Strictly adhere to guidelines concerning an eight-hour workday (i.e. reporting to work on time, leaving and returning to the shop promptly, not overextending lunch break).
- Assist other personnel in general housekeeping and seasonal tasks including but not limited to painting, pressure washing, and grass cutting.
- Drive a school bus when needed.
- Assist with inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing of all motorized equipment on a regular and systematic basis with emphasis on preventive maintenance and safety.
- Assist in accurately maintaining daily, monthly, and yearly reports and repair/maintenance records.
- Assist in the preparation and submission of purchase orders for parts and equipment to the Director of Operations to ensure budget limitations are not exceeded.
- Assist in the coordination schedules and prioritization of shop activities for Transportation/Bus Shop employees.
- Stay abreast of new developments in the areas of equipment, standards, specifications, and service techniques.
- Monitor two-way radio and make necessary recommendations.
- Promote high standards of safety and good housekeeping for the vehicles, shop, and grounds.
- Monitor inventory of repair parts and supplies.
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information.
- Assist in the recruitment and training of new drivers and shop personnel.
- Possess skills associated with repair or replacement of components of the engine, transmission, differential, suspension, steering, braking, and electrical systems of a bus or any other fleet vehicles.
- Possess skills associated with gas and electrical welding techniques.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
- This position typically requires some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, standing, walking,
reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and other repetitive motions. Exerting up to 100 pounds of
force will frequently occur.
