Position Overview
The Camp Ranger is an integral member of the Scouting team responsible for the management and upkeep of camp facilities and properties at Camp John J Barnhardt. This role involves supervising employees and/or volunteers involved in seasonal and year-round maintenance, health and safety, security, and overall camp management. The Camp Ranger will be required to live onsite in housing provided by the Council as part of the compensation package
Responsibilities
- Oversee and supervise the use of camp property, including conducting patrols to monitor for trespass, vandalism, fire, weather damage, etc.
- Ensure a safe and healthy camp environment by following emergency procedures and adhering to the Guide to Safe Scouting and National Camp Accreditation Standards.
- Maintain all physical property and equipment (tractors, mowers, vehicles, etc.) in safe, working condition.
- Prepare facilities for campers’ arrival by ensuring cleanliness and readiness of all camp buildings and amenities.
- Conduct regular inspections to identify required repairs and corrective actions.
- Submit estimates of time and materials for necessary repairs and perform general maintenance tasks.
- Complete certification for swimming pool operations, manage pool maintenance and maintain records of testing.
- Submit regular reports and maintain essential business records (e.g., timesheets, gas usage).
- Manage purchase orders and provide monthly reconciliation reports.
- Supervise maintenance contractors as assigned.
- Maintain positive working relationships with Camp Directors and event chairs.
- Work closely with volunteers on various camping, programmatic, and administrative tasks, fostering a positive and collaborative environment.
Competencies
- Computers, cell phones, hand tools, shop tools, vehicles, trailers, tractors, chain saws, mowers, weed eaters, aquatics and shooting sports equipment, and commercial kitchen equipment.
- Must embody and live by the Scout Oath and Law principles.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a helpful, friendly attitude are required.
- Ability to enforce Council policies and procedures effectively.
- Attendance at the National Ranger training certification course is required.
- Competence in basic maintenance skills (plumbing, electrical, carpentry) and the use of hand tools is essential.
- Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, and Office 365) preferred.
Education
- High school diploma or GED equivalent (some college or technical school training preferred).
Qualifications
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Must live on Property in the “Rangers House”.
- Experience with maintenance work and the use of tools required.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively with others.
- Must complete a Scouting America application, including youth protection training and background check.
- Previous experience with Scouting America is preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements
- Medium to heavy physical work, including tasks that may require strenuous physical effort
- Exposure to both indoor and outdoor environments, including varying weather conditions.
- Physical labor will be required at times
