The Lead Camp Ranger at Covered Wagon Scout Reservation gives on-site leadership to camp operation, maintenance, and supervision of the Assistant Camp Ranger. They build and retain partnerships among business, industrial, professional, and service organizations to facilitate financial and volunteer support of the camp. Utilizing their expertise, they help the Mid-America Council deliver impactful camping and outdoor experiences to Scouts – boys and girls ages 5 to 20 years old – and serve the needs of outside groups and individuals for which the camp’s facilities and programs align.
Covered Wagon Scout Reservation is located on the south bank of the Platte River north of Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska, and encompasses Camp Cedars on the western half and Camp Eagle on the easter half. Camp Cedars has been the home of summer camp programs since 1939.
Responsibilities
- Live on camp property. Housing and utilities are provided as part of the compensation package.
- Provide leadership and supervision of the Assistant Camp Ranger.
- Be responsible for the appearance of the overall property to be aesthetically pleasing to all who visit, including the cleanliness and maintenance of all buildings to maintain a high-quality appearance for customers. Abide by all necessary government standards as well as facility standards imposed by Scouting America.
- Provide excellent customer service to all visitors to the property. Represent the council and be able to communicate effectively while enforcing the established policies and procedures.
- Work closely with the summer camp directors and staff to ensure they are set up for success with their facility and equipment needs.
- Increase volunteer engagement by recruiting and supporting a group of volunteers that assist with camp maintenance/projects and a group of volunteers that assist with camp reservations. Additionally, prepare and promote one-time volunteer opportunities for individuals, groups, and businesses looking for community service opportunities.
- Maintain harmonious relationships with local officials and governmental services, adjoining landowners, and neighboring communities. Build and maintain relationships to facilitate financial and volunteer support.
- Keep all physical property and equipment in operational condition and good appearance, being particularly alert to conditions which could affect health, safety, sanitation, and good organization of the camp.
- Develop and follow project schedules for regular inspections to determine essential repairs, routine maintenance, operational procedures, and ordering supplies. Maintain current and historical documentation of all repairs conducted at camp.
- Maintain swimming pool and keep a current Pool Operator’s License. Maintain well water systems and keep a current Water Operator’s License.
- Help develop and adhere to the camp budgets for annual operations, specific events, and capital projects. This may include securing bids and identifying new revenue sources to achieve budget objectives. Comply with established business procedures including bookkeeping of petty cash, reconciliation of camp reports, deposits, purchase orders and retaining business records.
- This position is Full Time Exempt and is exposed to all weather and environmental conditions. Must be able to maintain regular attendance. This position requires the employees to work long, irregular hours when needed, including early mornings, evenings and weekends as demanded by the workload. This position requires weekend work.
- Carry out the Council’s strategic long-range plan in all areas that relate to this job assignment.
- Assist with maintenance needs at service centers or other camps as needed, and other duties as assigned.
Competencies
- Ability to register as a member of Scouting America
- 21 years of age or older.
- Ability to become certified as required by Scouting America and local, state and federal governments.
Qualifications
- Experience with carpentry, plumbing, electrical, welding, lawn maintenance, and small engine repair preferred. Ability to creatively problem solve.
- Basic computer skills are mandatory with the ability to learn and utilize the camp’s online reservation system and facility maintenance software.
- Self-motivated individual with solid time management skills and organizational skills in management, budgeting, and planning.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external customers
- Basic fiscal management and budget development skills

- Pay or Pay Range: $38,000 – 45,000 annually.
