Summary
Scrap Metal Services a leading scrap metal recycler in Brownsville, Texas, is seeking a skilled and experienced Heavy Machinery Operator to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy machinery to lift, move, or manipulate various scrap commodities while ensuring that all efforts are compliant with the company’s environmental, health, and safety standards. This role requires a high level of precision and safety awareness.
Roles and Responsibilities
Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of primarily the heaviest and largest types of equipment used in a full range dismantling and recycling work, including backhoes, loaders, magnets, grapples, sheers and excavators
Operates heavy equipment. Including but not limited to running, maneuvering, navigating and driving
Inspects heavy equipment. Including but not limited to structures and materials; ability to identify causes of errors and other problems or defects
Monitors information. Including but not limited to materials, events or environment; able to detect or assess problems associated with heavy equipment
Reviews information related to heavy equipment
Identifies information. Including but not limited to categorizing, estimating and recognizing differences or similarities in heavy equipment; ability to detect changes in circumstances or events
Determines load weights. Including but not limited to checking weights against lifting/hauling capacities; ability to work to prevent equipment overloads
Knowledge of and adherence to safety requirements in a scrap yard environment, including use of proper PPE
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience operating Excavators, Grapples, Shears, etc.
- Strong understanding of heavy machinery operations, and safety regulations.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and at heights.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot and perform minor repairs on machinery.
- Must pass employee physical and drug screen.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in scrap metal industry.
- Additional certifications related to heavy equipment.
Physical Requirements
Ability to walk more than 1000 yards, sit or stand for extended periods of time, lift and carry up to 50 lbs., climb stairs and/or ladders, stoop, crawl, reach, handle, push, pull, twist, kneel, squat, see, speak, and hear.
Working Conditions
Aboard a Marine Vessel or dismantling yard. Required to work outside in all kinds of weather or in buildings without heating or air conditioning. Some tasks are dangerous, including removing lead, asbestos or chemicals.
