What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Product Designer position at Scribd?
At Scribd (pronounced “scribbed”), our mission is to spark human curiosity. Join our team as we create a world of stories and knowledge, democratize the exchange of ideas and information, and empower collective expertise through our three products: Everand, Scribd, and Slideshare.
We support a culture where our employees can be real and be bold; where we debate and commit as we embrace plot twists; and where every employee is empowered to take action as we prioritize the customer.
When it comes to workplace structure, we believe in balancing individual flexibility and community connections. It’s through our flexible work benefit, Scribd Flex, that employees – in partnership with their manager – can choose the daily work-style that best suits their individual needs. A key tenet of Scribd Flex is our prioritization of intentional in-person moments to build collaboration, culture, and connection. For this reason, occasional in-person attendance is required for all Scribd employees, regardless of their location.
So what are we looking for in new team members? Well, we hire for “GRIT”. The textbook definition of GRIT is demonstrating the intersection of passion and perseverance towards long term goals. At Scribd, we are inspired by the potential that this can unlock, and ask each of our employees to pursue a GRIT-ty approach to their work. In a tactical sense, GRIT is also a handy acronym that outlines the standards we hold ourselves and each other to. Here’s what that means for you: we’re looking for someone who showcases the ability to set and achieve Goals, achieve Results within their job responsibilities, contribute Innovative ideas and solutions, and positively influence the broader Team through collaboration and attitude.
About the team and role
We’re looking for a data-driven senior or staff level Product Designer to lead design across our Growth pillar, working on experiences to drive customer acquisition, activation, engagement, and retention for all 3 of our products, and mentoring other growth designers. You'll own growth strategy and execution on initiatives like new subscription offerings, personalized sign up flows, onboarding, and offboarding experiences, referral and gift programs, and more.
We're a team that values experimentation, craft, collaboration, and above all, our people. You’ll be a great fit if you have a high bar for visual design, love to generate and test ideas quickly, can demonstrate understanding of business metrics, and have a track record of making impact.
You will:
Partner with product, data analytics, user research, engineering, and customer support to gain a deep understanding of user needs, opportunities, and behavior to acquire new users, deliver value quickly, and increase retention and LTV.
Lead design projects from brief, research, and concept exploration through prototyping, visual design details, and stewardship through development.
Use data collected from research, user testing, and market evaluation to create truly user-centered designs.
Run A/B tests to optimize sign up, onboarding, and offboarding flows.
Pair with our research department to plan and conduct user research, and test prototypes to understand user needs and emotions and the resonance of our product — synthesizing the results to inspire empathy and bring clarity to the broader team.
Visualize and communicate complex design solutions across use cases by creating process flows, wireframes, motion studies, prototypes, and high fidelity mock-ups.
Develop and maintain detailed design documentation & specifications for your work.
Work closely with engineers, stakeholders, and partners to ensure that the user experience is polished and as intended.
Use a variety of metrics to evaluate and continuously improve the user experience.
Regularly present your work to senior leaders for review and feedback.
You have:
Experience: 6 years as a product designer leading growth initiatives with a strong portfolio demonstrating experience with A/B testing and using data to impact conversion rate, activation rate, and user engagement.
Craft: You have a high bar for visual polish and are fluent in UX, visual and interactive design best practices for web and native mobile experiences. You love crafting beautifully designed solutions based on insights from real people, focusing on iterative improvements toward an innovative future vision.
Ownership: You show strong initiative, empathy, leadership, and strategic partnership.
Communication: You’re a strong storyteller who has the ability to explain complex ideas clearly and persuasively, and present your work in a way that energizes and creates shared ownership for both leaders and peers. You also have the skills to mentor those around you to deliver high quality work.
Collaboration: You thrive partnering with product managers, engineers, researchers, and data scientists. You can synthesize and incorporate their points of view in your work.
Customer centricity: You put users at the center of everything you create and are passionate about improving their experiences.
Tool proficiency: You are proficient in Figma (our primary tool) and prototyping tools of your choosing.
