What are the responsibilities and job description for the Publishing Manager position at Scribe Media?
Publishing Manager at Scribe Media
Scribe is the first, the largest, and the leading Professional Publisher. We do things differently than traditional publishers – we believe authors can and should fully own their books creatively and financially, and it is our job to help them do so at the highest possible level. Leading the author’s experience and ensuring they have a fantastic book in the end is one of the most important pieces of this.
We are seeking a Publishing Manager to join the team. We are looking for someone who is both a world-class project manager and a true service professional. You will be the one responsible for guiding our authors on their journey in publishing by ensuring we’ve given them the feedback and tools they need to have a book they’re proud of. You’ll do this by setting expectations early and often, proactively communicating updates, managing dozens of tasks and timelines, and providing the author with a smooth, professional experience. You are the author’s advocate, leader, and advisor on their publishing journey.
Who Should Apply?
Exceptional candidates will have a strong combination of the following:
- Incredible Project Management Skills: You have at least 6-8 years of experience owning projects and processes, and you love it. In this role, you will be responsible for understanding an author’s goals and assigning appropriate tasks and deadlines to work within project parameters.
- Impeccable Attention to Detail: When it comes to authors and their books, every single detail matters. Your attention to detail, proactive communication, and ability to stay organized are crucial to the success of a project.
- Excellent Communication Skills: You should be comfortable and experienced with speaking on the phone and over video with people. Our authors rely on the expert guidance of our team, and their author experience is a key area where trust is built from that guidance. You must be able to listen closely and understand what they are saying. You also have experience engaging with outside vendors, contractors, part-timers, or freelancers. You are confident and able to engage and guide them in a professional manner.
- Exceptional Social Intelligence: This position will require you to work with a lot of different types of personalities, clearly set expectations with them, and get them to do the work they have to do—even if they are resistant, or want to do it a different way. You’ll need to have exceptional social intelligence. Sometimes you will need to have hard conversations with them, and even set limits with people who are not used to hearing "no"—but do it in a way that doesn't upset them or derail the project.
- Service Mindedness: Experience working with high-end clientele, professional communication, and the drive to serve others. You are excited by being in service to your clients and celebrating their successes with them. You have 6-8 years of experience in client service, including experience in de-escalations and complex problem-solving.
- Strategic and Critical Thinking: Ability to thrive in fast-paced environments, embrace the unknown, and adapt to a quickly changing environment without losing the thread on project goals. You set clear expectations for yourself and others for successful outcomes and you can easily assess and pivot to meet those expectations.
- You Are Self-Motivated and Very Good at Getting Things Done: This is an absolute must. You must be the definition of a doer and very self-motivated. You cannot hide in this role, you cannot do things half-assed, and you won't have people picking up your slack. We don't want people who have to be constantly managed. We all work very hard every day, because we care about our mission, and what we do matters to us and other people.
Role Responsibilities
- To impeccably manage projects for our authors from signing through publishing and beyond.
- Navigate each author's book as an individually customized project. Take time to understand the goals of the project and customize to fit those needs. Ensure your author’s book is always moving forward on schedule. Ensure author's projects are completed on time, on budget, and with excellence.
- Communicate as the Project Owner across all areas of the business to ensure our author's needs are met, and their expectations are exceeded.
- Help authors solve any problems that come up on a day-to-day basis—questions about audiobooks, marketing, issues with cover design, print run delays, and more. Solve these problems, answer questions, and make strong decisions completely independently with positive outcomes.
- Help authors address fears or anxieties that may arise. Publishing a book is a big deal for people, and sometimes that requires some emotional help, as well as publishing help.
- Proactively and professionally communicate expectations to your authors so they always know what to expect and what's needed from them. Take decisive actions surrounding how to best communicate with each author in a timely manner with excellent attention to detail.
- Work with the team to ensure all work on the book (writing, design, etc) reflects the author’s voice and intent. (You will not be writing or editing the manuscript yourself).
What You Will Earn
- Fulfillment from helping craft amazing books within a business model that empowers authors and defines the future of the publishing industry.
- $85k salary
- Commission for selling add-on services to our authors. You’re not handling all sales, but you’ll have the ability to earn extra cash if authors sign on for add-ons, marketing services, etc. while working with you.
- Excellent benefits: we pay 90% of your medical, dental, and vision insurance (and 50% for dependents).
- Five weeks paid time off including holidays and the week between Christmas and New Year’s.
- Up to 4% 401k match, because saving for retirement is wise.
- Generous parental leave policy to bond with your growing family (Congrats!)
- Free access to the entire Scribe Library.
- As with all journeys, the real treasure is the friends you make along the way. The team at Scribe is a unique collection of talented, hardworking, and kind people who love what we do and the authors we serve.
Where you'll do it
Wherever you want, for the most part. This role is remote. Scribe does have an office in Austin, Texas which you are welcome to use. (About 1/3 of the company is there.)
You will be expected to work overlapping hours with the US, if you live internationally. We're only considering candidates located in the United States, and that are authorized to work in the United States. We will not sponsor applicants for work visas.
What Scribe Does (and Why)
Our mission is to help everyone on earth write, publish and market their book.
The problem is that writing and publishing books is, for most people, a painful and difficult process, loaded with uncertainty and aggravation. Our goal is to make it as simple as possible, so as many people as possible can do it.
We offer world-class publishing quality to authors of any background. When authors publish their books with us, they keep ALL of their rights, royalties, and final creative decisions. (Traditional publishing controls their IP and takes 80 % of an author’s royalties.)
We have three main paths to help authors write and publish. We can edit and publish an already written manuscript (Scribe Publishing), or we can help people write their book using a structured process with our guidance (Scribe Guided Author), or we can do a structured interview process that pulls a book out of them in their words and their voice (Scribe Professional). We also have a very top-of-the-line service, Scribe Elite.
If someone can't afford our services, that's fine. We give away all of our information for free. Seriously, it's called Scribe Book School, and it's better than any paid course on the internet.
We have published over 2,000 books for 1,000 authors over the past 10 years. This includes household names like David Goggins, Nassim Taleb, and Chris Voss. We see our role as helping authors to succeed — whatever that means to them. We have helped authors impact social issues, earn millions in business, change careers, cement legacies, and sell millions of copies.
