What are the responsibilities and job description for the Agricultural Assistant II/Farm Assistant position at SCSU 1890 Research and Extension?
The Agriculture Assistant II/Farm Assistant’s primary responsibility is performing year-round maintenance field operations, planting, and harvesting of crops.
Job Functions/Duties/Responsibilities:
The individual will participate in the maintenance activities at the Olar Demonstration Farm and assist in the operation and maintenance of facilities, electrical, plumbing, carpentry repair, and major projects as required. The individual will assist the farm manager in the implementing experimental plot design;s, allocation, and preparation.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Performs skilled duties in the area of installation, maintenance, repair and operation of facilities at the 1890 Research and Extension Demonstration Farm in Olar, SC in accordance with generally accepted trade practices.
The employee will assist in maintenance, repair, and needs for Olar Demonstration Farm. The employee will demonstrate effective use of various trade tools and equipment, and skills in making emergency and general repair, and adjustment to equipment in building and maintenance work. Collaborate with the farm manager in the application of all Research and Extension field demonstrations, field day events, and required farm needs.
Implement maintenance schedule for Olar Demonstration Farm grounds and facilities. Employee will perform lawn care activities in accordance with generally accepted trade practices.
Employee will provide the Administration with technical advice for the area maintenance, renovation, and construction projects. The employee will assist with the collection of information needed to provide the farm Administration with specific technical advice with regard to maintenance, renovation, and construction. Assist farm manager in routine monitoring of the farm perimeter, fence line, tree lines, and ponds.
Education and Experience:
The individual should possess a High School Diploma, GED, or safety practices relevant to the area of employment.

None
Work Environment:
Expected to work beyond the traditional 8:30 am - 5:00 pm work schedule. Must be able to work evenings and weekends, especially during the summer.
Physical Requirements:
Position may involve occasional bending, moving, lifting, and carrying materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds).
- Previous experience in a similar role is preferred but not mandatory.

The individual must have the ability to follow through with assignments after receiving instructions. The employee must be able to use good judgment in making decisions, exhibit good working relationships with people, and be highly dependable in planning, implementing, and reporting activities. Must have a valid driver’s license.
