Opportunity Overview

SD Solutions is seeking a highly motivated and innovative Biomedical Research Scientist / Engineer SETA to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in immunology, nucleic acid therapeutics, or synthetic biology, for advanced scientific research, engineering, and technology development. As a leading agency in health innovation, ARPA-H focuses on creating breakthrough technologies and methodologies to advance the health of the nation. The researcher will play a critical role in driving this mission forward. The successful applicant will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to conduct rigorous research and develop cutting-edge solutions that address complex health challenges faced by our nation.

The scientist in this role will help build emerging programs and manage existing programs for a new ARPA-H Program Manager. Specifically, you will support the development and management of projects and initiatives in topics pertaining to applications of synthetic biology at the intersection of detection, diagnostics, and therapeutics. Current and planned efforts include discovery, development and validation of machine learning models of the "molecular grammar" of protein folding, mis-folding, and phase separation; discovery of novel biomarkers of protein mis-folding; development and validation of innovative tools, models, and platforms for the rapid discovery and prototyping of novel protein aggregation targets and therapeutics; and manipulation of phase separation and biomolecular condensates for new-to-biology compartmentalization and functionality.

The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) is a new agency within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). It is a research funding agency that supports transformative biomedical and health breakthroughs to provide health solutions for all. ARPA-H accelerates better health outcomes for everyone by supporting the development of high-impact solutions to society's most challenging health problems. These opportunities will advance high-potential, high-impact biomedical and health research that cannot be readily accomplished through traditional research or commercial activity. With a scope spanning the molecular to the societal, these programs have the potential to radically improve everyone's health."

Responsibilities Include but are limited to :

Assist, support and provide advice to the Program Manager to further the development and progress of new and existing programs.
Provide subject matter expertise in immunology, nucleic acid therapeutics, synthetic biology, materials science, and / or applied biotechnology.
Evaluate technical proposals for scientific merit and innovation. Provide feedback, organize reviewer comments, draft recommendations and project summaries, and presentation materials.
Coordinate independent verification and validation (IV&V).
Handle a wide variety of tasks, such as briefing support and general administrative actions.

Requirements Overview

Ph.D. in fields relevant to the support of immunology, nucleic acid therapeutics, synthetic biology, materials science, and / or applied biotechnology.

Candidates must have a minimum of seven (7) years hands-on experience with a breadth of expertise allowing them to assess technologies across a broad range of applications.

Ideal candidates will have experience in :

Biochemistry (including analysis of intrinsically disordered proteins [IDRs], amyloid-forming proteins, and biomolecular condensates in vitro and in vivo);

Development of novel in vitro and in vivo assay and model systems;

Neurological consequences of IDRs / amyloid proteins in neurodegenerative disorders;

Biological engineering and synthetic biology approaches for IDRs to enable biological / operational biotechnology platforms;

Development of novel detection platforms;

Structural biology;

Medical diagnostics;

Design, development, and prototyping of cell-free biomanufacturing platforms;

Materials science;

Biosecurity and bioethics;

Clinical / animal studies;

Neurodegenerative diseases;

Regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA Q-submission);

Countermeasure development; and

Test and evaluation.

Expertise anticipating and mitigating ethical, legal, and societal implications of high-profile research efforts is desired.

Candidates should have strong technical writing skills, ability to communicate complex scientific ideas to broad audiences, digest basic and applied research across areas of biotechnology and apply to health capability gaps and demonstrates a willingness to explore the scientific literature for emerging biotechnology.

Ideal candidates will additionally have experience coordinating independent verification and validation, and previous experience managing programs with cooperative agreements, OTA awards, milestone-based contracts, FFRDCs, interagency efforts, and commercialization efforts.

Experience working with government clients.

Ability for quick response and dedicated to continuous improvement.

Willingness to manage multiple tasks at once and adhere to guidelines, budgets, and deadlines.

Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills.

Extraordinary oral and written communication skills are required.

Experience coordinating across agencies and departments is desired.

Experience with ARPA processes and direct support to Government program managers highly preferred.

Prefer experience supporting DARPA or related Federal "ARPA" agencies (IARPA, ARPA-E, ARPA-H, HSARPA).

Alternate preferable experience at NIH, CDC, FDA, Public Health Service, NSF, USDA.
