South Dakota State University (SDSU) is looking for a Laboratory Program Assistant to support our Animal Resource Wing. We are looking for someone who is self-motivated and has experience working with animals in a research environment. Job Responsibilities: The overall purpose of this position is to assist with user training, maintenance monitoring, inventory control and gnotobiotic program, assisting with animal care along with providing a back up to the Animal Resource Wing Manager. This involves some student supervision of care, as well as appropriate administration in compliance with Federal Regulations. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of: Computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Outlook)Animal husbandry and medical care of numerous animal species: mice, rats, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, mink, goats, poultry, sheep, and cattleGnotobiotic and colostrum deprived animal work-animals and equipmentBiosafety-Thoroughly understand pathogens of multiple species and the means (engineering, SOPS, PPE, disinfectants, and sterilizers) to control them.Working knowledge of biosecurity and biosafety Skill & Ability to: Experience with training and research supportCommunicate information clearly, concisely, and accurately to others.Exercise tact, patience, discretion, and professional demeanor while providing outstanding customer service.Think critically and make independent decisions. Effectively understand, perform, and assist with writing standard operating procedures.Work independently and as part of a team. Preferred Qualifications: Veterinary CVT/RVT or bachelor’s degree in related field such as veterinary/animal scienceMinimum five years working with livestock or laboratory animal species.
