Black Hills State University seeks a motivated and dynamic individual to serve as Professional Advisor in the Student Success Center. This position serves as official of-record academic advisors to a caseload of undergraduate students from first year through graduation. The advisor will support activities to enhance academic success, retention, learning, and development of students. This position requires the ability to multitask in a busy environment with frequent interruptions, flexibility, a positive attitude, professionalism, and an ability to learn quickly and work with diverse others. This is a 12-month, benefit-eligible position.RESPONSIBILITIES:· Advise a caseload of students on matters including transitioning to college, registration, major selection, schedule and grad plan development, goal setting, curricular & co-curricular engagement, financial well-being, and professional/graduation preparation.· Refer students to appropriate departmental offices and support services and coordinate with other departments to enhance the student experience.· Provide guidance and personal support to students with high need and conducting early alert outreach and academic support & recovery services.· Accurately communicate University policies and procedures.· Maintain ongoing contact with advisees.· Maintain detailed records of interactions with advisees.· Assist students in exploring career options related to their academic programs of study.· Serve as a liaison to academic areas/faculty served, as well as financial aid, registrar, admissions, housing, counseling, and numerous other resource offices on campus; collaborate with these areas to improve student services.· Deliver presentations about academic advising in classrooms, events, and other settings.· Help coordinate and execute SSC advising programs and retention events including tutoring and new student orientation, and others.· Represent the Student Success Center at various University events and meetings.· Occasional evening and/or weekend work will be required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:· Master's degree in any field is required· Effective written and verbal communication skills, including active listening· Strong interpersonal skills· Ability to work with and relate to a wide range of individuals, including college students· Flexible, adaptive, and positive working stylePREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:· Master's degree in education, counseling, or related field is preferred· Experience working with a population of undergraduate college students with varied backgrounds· Knowledge of activities designed to enhance student success and retention· Knowledge of student development/learning theory· Strong understanding of University environment and operationCOMMENTS:The BHSU Student Success Center is committed to a holistic advising approach while providing a supportive, student-centered environment.TO APPLY:Applications must be made online at http://yourfuture.sdbor.edu; attach a cover letter, resume, and names/contact information of at least three professional references.
