Position Summary:
The Yard Truck Trainer is responsible for training and certifying associates on the safe and efficient operation of yard trucks at a distribution center. This role ensures compliance with company policies, industry safety regulations, and standards while improving operational efficiency.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and conduct training sessions for new and existing associates on the proper operation of yard trucks and over the road trucks.
- Provide hands-on instruction on vehicle controls, maneuvering techniques, coupling/uncoupling trailers, and safety procedures.
- Assess and certify associates in compliance with OSHA, and DOT, regulations.
- Partner with a CDL driving school to help qualified associates complete CDL training.
- Ensure associates adhere to company policies and safety protocols such as pre-trip inspections, securing the load, and accident prevention strategies.
- Keep up to date with industry regulations and best practices to maintain a compliant training program.
- Conduct refresher training and remedial training as needed.
- Assist in improving yard flow and efficiency by training drivers on best practices for trailer movement and organization.
- Provide coaching and feedback to improve driver performance.
- Report safety violations and provide corrective action recommendations.
- Maintain accurate records of training sessions, certifications, and perform yard truck evaluations.
- Generate reports on training effectiveness and operator performance.
Employment Standards:
Knowledge
- Knowledge of DOT, OSHA, and workplace safety regulations.
Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience operating yard trucks or in a similar logistics/transportation role.
- Prior experience in training or supervisory roles is a plus.
Essential Requirements
- Strong understanding of yard truck operation, safety protocols, and best practices.
- Effective communication and coaching skills.
- Ability to assess and certify drivers based on performance.
- Yard truck operation certification (if required by employer).
- OSHA safety certification or trainer credentials.
- Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License)
Working Conditions
- May require flexible scheduling, including nights and weekends, depending on operational needs.
- Ability to Travel.
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods in one location which may be restricted to the employee’s workstation.
- Physical demands include standing for long periods, climbing in/out of trucks, and occasional lifting.
- Typically works in an outdoor/yard environment with exposure to varying weather conditions.
