We are offering an exciting opportunity for a motivated and analytical student to undertake a thesis project focused on the application of the adjoint state method in discrete element method (DEM) simulations. DEM allows for the simulation of particle motion, commonly used in mixing powders before compacting them into tablets within the pharmaceutical manufacturing process.

Thesis work description:  

As DEM simulations can be time-consuming, especially when dealing with a large number of particles, understanding the sensitivity of solutions to varying parameters is crucial. This project aims to explore the adjoint state method, a technique that can efficiently compute both the solution and its sensitivities while minimizing computation time. 

Key Objectives: 

  • Develop or Adapt Existing DEM Software: Create a simple simulation to explore the feasibility of the approach. Focus on maintaining simplicity in terms of the experiment, DEM model, and particle count. 
  • Develop an Objective Function: Identify and define an objective function relevant to the simulations that you want to study for sensitivity to various parameters. 
  • Validate the DEM Software and Adjoint State Method: Establish a validation process for the developed software and the application of the adjoint state method in this context. 
  • Evaluate Method Efficacy: Assess whether the adjoint state method is effective for improving DEM simulations and sensitivity analysis. 

Structure: 

  • Start date: Fall term 2025 (adapted after the course) 
  • Scope: 30 hp/credits 

Essential Requirements: 

  • Ongoing master’s studies within relevant field 
  • Knowledge of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and numerical solution of ODEs.  
  • Knowledge of Newtonian mechanics.
