Retail Barista Trainer – Regional

The Retail Barista Trainer supports operations by providing training and education for retail staff members of Olympia Coffee and Moonrise Bakery, and leading by example while working barista shifts. The Retail Barista Trainer reports directly to the Director of Training and Innovation and works alongside Café Team Leaders and the Retail Director as a part of the Retail Leadership Team. This position is responsible for sustaining growth and development in their regional locations, but will require regular travel to all locations. The Retail Barista Trainer works in close collaboration with Cafe Team Leaders, Assistant Team Leaders, and Lead Baristas to support continued excellence and development in barista staff.

Retail Barista Trainers can expect an average of 12 barista shifts a quarter, and can anticipate picking up shifts as necessary to provide coverage.

Candidates are required to attend at least one interview in-person interview as well as technical interview

1. Operate Regional Training Lab

  • Oversee operations of regional Olympia Coffee Barista Training Lab.
  • Set up, conduct, and break down New Hire/Continued Education training for staff.
  • Train new staff on Olympia Coffee standards of espresso preparation, drink building, brew science, hospitality, and bar management.
  • Conduct and participate in regular continued education (advanced classes, offerings cuppings, sensory exercises, etc.) with existing barista staff.
  • Encourage advancement and track growth and performance of all barista staff through the Barista Pathways Stepping Stones.
  • Oversee lab equipment care and basic maintenance and coordinate with the Equipment and Maintenance manager for necessary equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Work with lab-adjacent cafe teams to maintain lab condition and cleanliness as a showroom for Olympia Coffee
  • Manage and coordinate events occurring in a regional training lab with the Wholesale team and Director of Training and Innovation.

2. Uphold Olympia Coffee Standards

  • Work an average of two (2) floor shifts as a barista at Olympia Coffee/Moonrise Bakery locations weekly. During floor shifts lead by example, offer coaching to baristas, and encourage participation in Pathways.
  • Perform holistic quality control on all Olympia Coffee/Moonrise Bakery retail stores. Holistic quality control focusing on cafe and product presentation, hospitality and guest engagement, quality and efficiency in drink building and bar management.
  • Provide coaching to baristas from a holistic quality control perspective.
  • Provide feedback to cafe team leaders and lead baristas from a holistic quality control perspective.
  • Provide feedback to leadership on opportunities to better execute service and quality goals.

3. Support Cafe Operations

  • Participate as a member of Olympia Coffee/Moonrise Bakery’s Retail Leadership Team.
  • Support all cafes, regardless of region, with shift coverage as necessary.
  • Support managers with in-store training as necessary including on the floor and at staff meetings.
  • Support retail teams by introducing and training on new equipment, products, standards and recipes as necessary. Adjust recipes/calibrate equipment in stores to meet company standards
  • Provide some preventative maintenance and troubleshooting for equipment currently in cafes, work with external resources to maintain equipment as necessary.
  • Assists the Director of Training and Innovation in maintaining and improving the annual seasonal drink menu, as well as assisting in developing and executing the limited offering drink menu.

4. Industry Professionalism

  • Host Public Cuppings weekly in the Cherry St. Cupping Lab/Columbia City Lab
  • Assist the Director of Training and Innovation in developing training and educating guests to brew the best coffee at home.
  • Attend and represent Olympia Coffee at industry events (USCC competitions, Global Coffee Expos, CoffeeFest, etc.)
  • Assist the Director of Training and Innovation and Creative/Marketing team in planning and hosting events, either public or internal.
  • Stays current with and participates in specialty coffee industry trends, products, and general knowledge to integrate into current curriculum and cafe operation when necessary.

  • Preferred previous management/leadership experience
  • Ability to navigate Google Suite and experience with Microsoft Office
