Essential Job Functions

  • Applies strategies and techniques to foster independence, self-reliance and social skills.
  • Delivers lesson plans, presentation of learning materials, and in conduct of instructional exercises.
  • Monitors student's progress regarding individual educational plans and goals.
  • Monitors individual students and / or small groups of students with autism in a variety of instructional activities as a follow-up to the presentation of instructional lessons by instructional personnel.
  • Uses positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to assist students in the development of appropriate behavior.
  • Uses a variety of instructional materials and learning aids geared to the instruction level of children with autism.
  • Monitors students during classroom activities, recesses, and field trips.
  • Operates and assist students in the operation of a variety of instructional aids and media and computer assisted instructional equipment.
  • Maintains an orderly, safe, and positive learning environment.
  • Depending on students' needs, assists students with basic personal care activities such as dressing, toileting or bathroom including catheterization, feeding and grooming.
  • Usesgood judgment regarding appropriate action to assist injured or physically ill students and to assist in medical emergencies.
  • Assists students on and off the bus as needed.
  • Administers a variety of tests and record results.
  • Attends sspecialized training as required.

  • Behavior management strategies and techniques relating to students with Autism
  • Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups.
  • Quickly recognize and respond to emergencies pertaining to a variety of student medical conditions.
  • Assist students with basic personal care activities such as dressing or toileting as needed.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional materials and procedures to enhance a positive educational environment.

  • Qualifications Profile

  • Certification / License :
  • Delaware State Certification as : 1573 Teacher of Students with Autism or Students with Severe Intellectual Disabilities
  • Subject or area certification also required.

    A category certificate may not be issued alone and an educator shall hold at least one subject or area certification.

    Successful candidates must provide evidence of successful PRAXIS II scores or a valid out of state teaching license. An educator applying for a license in the State of DE with less than 1 year of experience will be placed on an Initial License and will be required to take and pass a Performance Assessment by the end of their 2nd year of teaching. Applicants with one completed year of experience, but less than 4 years of experience will receive an Initial License, and are NOT required to pass a Performance Assessment (with proof of current and valid out of state license). Current holders of an Initial license are exempt from requirements to pass a Performance Assessment.

  • Education

  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in Exceptional Children / Special Education or related discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Additional Requirements

    4.1 An educator shall also have satisfied at least one (1) of the following additional education requirements :

    4.1.1 Graduating with a bachelor's or a master's degree, with a major in special education and with a concentration in autism and severe intellectual disabilities, from an NCATE specialty organization recognized educator preparation program or from a state approved educator preparation program, offered by a regionally accredited college or university. The state approval body shall employ the appropriate NASDTEC or NCATE specialty organization standard; or

    4.1.2 Graduating with a bachelor's or master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a major in special education; and

    4.1.2.1 Completion of a minimum of fifteen (15) credits from a regionally accredited college or university or their equivalent in professional development as approved by the Department, with a focus in autism and severe intellectual disabilities in the following content areas :

  • 4.1.2.1.1 Introduction to Autism and Severe Intellectual Disabilities (three credits);
  • 4.1.2.1.2 Methods of Instruction in Academic Standards and Functional Skills (three credits);
  • 4.1.2.1.3 Functional Communication Training (three credits);
  • 4.1.2.1.4 Applied Behavior Analysis for Educators (three credits); and

    4.1.2.1.5 Competency-Based Practicum in Behaviorally Based Teaching Techniques (three credits)

    Teacher Certification - Delaware Code Title 14 Section 1500

    NOTE : A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required for all employees of the Seaford School District.

    NOTE : Currently employed staff members interested and certified / licensed in this position will be given first consideration and should remit a staff transfer request on the Seaford School District website www.seafordbluejays.org no later than the application closing date referenced above.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT : All new state employees will be required to participate in the State of Delaware's Direct Deposit system. With direct deposit, wage and salary payments are deposited in the employee's bank account via electronic funds transfer.

  • All final candidates for employment must have a satisfactory criminal background check before being placed on contract / payroll as per State of Delaware regulations. Candidates must call the Delaware State Police at (800) 464-4357 to make an appointment. The cost of the criminal background check is $65 (expense borne by the prospective employee). Final candidates must also receive a satisfactory child protection registry check.
  • Final candidates must also produce documentation of Mantoux skin test results for entrance to school system.

    The State of Delaware has initiated a lag pay policy which means that new employees will receive the first paycheck at the end of the second pay period of work.
