Job Summary
The objective of this position is to provide oversight and management, including coordination and implementation of Indigenizing Education for Alaska program, administered through the Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) Education Department, under the direct supervision of the Education Deputy Director. The project will entail a significant amount of coordination, planning, and execution of scholarship administration, building and implementing an Indigenous Future Educator Program, supporting Community of Practice, oversee the new teacher apprenticeship track and recruitment. Independent judgment is required to leverage the allocated funding to develop a sustainable and effective educator and administrator preparation training program.
Duties/Responsibilities
Act as the figurative head of the Indigenizing Education for Alaska program when communicating with the SHI Board of Trustees, Management, and the general public.
Sustain and nurture professional relationships with the UAA, UAF, APU and UAS as well as school districts to ensure project objectives are achieved including.
Work in collaboration to ensure program development of the teacher Apprenticeship program.
Develop and implement the Indigenous Future Educators program, developing dual credit and work experience for high school and early colleges students interested in becoming a teacher.
Work closely with the program staff to manage the Education Scholarships at UAA, UAF, APU and UAS and support the students through tuition payment disbursement.
Direct, coordinate, assign, and supervise the activities led by the program staff and program partners.
Coordinate the annual award for Distinguished Educators.
Maintain grant compliance and reporting by assembling all necessary supporting materials and documents including, budget reports, outcome measurements, success stories, etc.; submit reports to grant funders.
Retain financial oversight to ensure compliance with grant requirements and expenditure of funds in a timely manner and within budget.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills
Demonstrated high level of verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Strong administrative skills and self-motivated with the ability to set priorities and manage multiple projects under minimal supervision in an effective and efficient manner.
Experience managing federal grants, grant reporting, and project evaluation.
Technical capacity and expertise in using charts, tables, graphs, spreadsheets, and databases.
Ability to work under pressure and respond to deadlines without sacrificing quality.
Extensive knowledge of teacher preparation programs and Alaska Native cultures.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position will have supervisory capacity over two people.
Work Environment
This position’s duties are performed at the Walter Soboleff Building. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to verbally communicate. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.
About this Role
This is a full-time benefited position. SHI employees are expected to work during SHI’s regular business hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday. Additionally, employees may work up to or over 45 hours per week or additional time as needed to meet workload demands or special events such as Celebration.
Required Education and Experience
3 years of professional work in project management and program coordination.
Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree in education, language, or project-related field
