Job Summary: The OR Circulator is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the nursing care of patients in the operating room. This role involves ensuring that the surgical environment is safe, the surgical team is prepared, and patients receive optimal care before, during, and after surgery.
Key Responsibilities:
Preoperative Duties:
- Assess patients' physical and emotional status before surgery.
- Verify patient identity and surgical procedure.
- Ensure that all necessary preoperative documentation and consent forms are completed.
- Review patients' medical history, allergies, and medications.
- Prepare the operating room with necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies.
Intraoperative Duties:
- Monitor and document patients' vital signs and responses to anesthesia.
- Assist the surgical team with gowning and gloving.
- Maintain a sterile environment and ensure adherence to aseptic techniques.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and provide necessary supplies and instruments.
- Communicate effectively with the surgical team, anesthesia providers, and other healthcare professionals.
- Ensure accurate count of sponges, needles, and instruments to prevent retained surgical items.
Postoperative Duties:
- Assist with transferring patients to the recovery area.
- Provide postoperative care instructions to patients and their families.
- Ensure proper documentation of the surgical procedure and patient care.
- Participate in postoperative debriefings and quality improvement activities.
Patient Advocacy:
- Serve as a liaison between the patient and the surgical team.

Collaboration and Communication:

Qualifications:
- Education: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing (ADN or BSN) from an accredited nursing program.
- Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications. Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) is preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience in perioperative nursing or operating room setting is preferred.
