About McCaw Hall:

McCaw Hall is a world-class, 3,000 seat multi-theater performing arts center hosting over 500 events and over 450,000 patron visits annually. Owned by the City of Seattle and operated by Seattle Center, McCaw Hall is managed in accordance with a unique Operating Agreement with its resident tenants, Pacific Northwest Ballet and Seattle Opera. McCaw Hall’s Operating Agreement provides its resident tenants with on-going oversight and shared responsibility for the Hall’s annual budget and operations.

About the position:

Seattle Center is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time Laborer (part time at McCaw Hall, part time on grounds depending on McCaw Hall event schedules) to work in McCaw Hall. This position is assigned to a variety of indoor and outdoor work areas as needed and reports to the Facilities Lead Worker.

Job Responsibilities

Here is more of what you will be doing:

  • Clean building perimeter, inside facility and rest rooms; remove garbage, set up furniture and flooring weighing up to and at times over 50 pounds
  • Event related set-ups/tear down in and around McCaw Hall
  • Most shifts are before and during major opera and ballet performances, as well as other fine arts performances and major events
  • Clean and provide service for patrons and clients during events
  • Interact directly with clients, event support staff, and patrons attending events in sometimes demanding situations
  • Provide information verbally to the public and to clients
  • Communicate with lead and take instructions via 2-way radio
  • May drive pick-up trucks and other small, motorized vehicles
  • May occasionally lead laborer crews in absence of supervisor/lead
  • May be scheduled for general laborer work on Seattle Center campus during periods of minimal event activity in McCaw Hall

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform general laboring/manual work, good physical condition, and the ability to work with hand and power tools

License, Certification, and Other Requirements:

  • Current State of Washington driver's license is required at time of hire

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following skills and abilities:

  • Customer service skills including the ability to work well under pressure and in full view of the public
  • Communicate and take instructions effectively and efficiently over a two-way radio
  • Ability to respond effectively and efficiently to multiple demands for action simultaneously while staying calm and polite
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and work on small teams within a diverse work force
  • Must possess a safety-oriented attitude and work habit
  • Demonstrated passion and commitment to providing a world-class experience for event clients and patrons
  • Proactive, creative, “problem-solving” work ethic balanced with a willingness to clarify expectations and instructions
  • Professional appearance appropriate for venue
  • Experience leading small crews
  • Knowledge of interior and exterior cleaning methods and equipment
  • Ability to interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds or more safely, through-out the work shift
  • Work schedule is predominantly swing shift between noon and midnight, including most weekends (both Saturday and Sunday), with some occasional earlier day-time shifts. Schedule will vary from month to month, with prior notice, depending on the event schedule in McCaw Hall
  • Willing and able to work outdoors in all types of weather, have general familiarity with small hand tools and power tools
  • May be scheduled to work on Seattle Center campus during periods of minimal event activity in McCaw Hall

The full pay range for this step-progression position is $30.86 - $32.80 per hour. New employees begin at Step 1 of the pay progression, which is $30.86 hourly. Current City employees’ starting rate of pay will be based on Personnel Rules regarding promotions.

Pre-Employment Physical - Successful candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment physical.
