About Planning & Capital Development Branch
The Planning & Capital Development Branch (PCD) delivers projects to the citizens of Seattle. The Planning team provides long range planning, project focused planning, asset management, and community engagement. The Engineering, Design, and Technical Services team provides project review oversight, upkeep of standards and specifications, bidding administration, and in-house design. It also houses a team of in-house designers, environmental analysts, and surveys. The Project Management team leads projects through construction documentation, bidding, permitting, construction, and project closeout. Together these teams are responsible for the implementation of the initiatives funded through the Metropolitan Park District (MPD), REET, grants, and other funding sources. The team collaborates department and citywide. This position will be housed in the Engineering, Design, and Technical Services team.
About The Position
Seattle Parks and Recreation is seeking an individual to join the Engineering, Design, and Technical Services team within the Planning and Capital Development Branch of the Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) Department. This position requires the basic knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices and procedures. The Associate Civil Engineer will perform engineering analysis and design, conduct field inspection and site assessment, respond to emergency calls related to landslide, perform public works and in-house construction inspection, provide recommendations with consultation with the Senior Civil Engineer.
Job Responsibilities
This position reports to the Senior Civil Engineer. The successful candidate will provide a wide array of engineering services not only to the staff within the Planning and Capital Development Branch, but also to maintenance and operations staff throughout the Parks Department.
We seek a well-rounded civil engineer with a diversity of experience and educational credentials that will allow him/her to effectively respond to the wide variety of situations and technical questions that will arise within our extensive park system.
Typical Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To
Minimum Required:
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology and three years of professional civil engineering experience; or other combinations of education and/or experience which provides preparation to do professional civil engineering work.
License, Certification And Other Requirements
Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Minimum Required:
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology and three years of professional civil engineering experience; or other combinations of education and/or experience which provides preparation to do professional civil engineering work.
License, Certification And Other Requirements
Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong design/construction background related to the following:
- Registration as an Engineer-in-Training in the State of Washington or eligibility for registration within 6 months of employment.
- Drainage, stormwater and/or sewer systems, including familiarity with onsite stormwater management using green stormwater infrastructure design and code requirements
- Major earthwork such as grading, roadwork, retaining walls, etc.
- Wetlands, creeks, steep slopes, other environmentally critical areas
- Able to assess geotechnical characteristics and soil/slope stability, especially with respect to steep slopes and landslide-prone areas
- Well-developed written and oral communication skills
- Experience using AutoCAD or Civil3D
- Experience using Bluebeam
- Intermediate-level skills/training in use of Microsoft Word and Excel programs
- Able to communicate and work effectively within a multi-cultural workforce serving a diverse customer base
- Able to lift and manipulate 20 pounds comfortably as needed for work in the field
- Able to investigate slope conditions in the field in potentially adverse weather conditions
- Able to work in a fast-paced environment and the flexibility to change priorities when necessary
- Able to work well independently and on a team
- The successful candidate should be creative, efficient, resourceful, patient, and have a good sense of humor

Work Environment/Physical Demands
- Work is performed in an office environment, with some field work required to visit and prepare assessments of parks and recreation facilities.
- Field assignments can entail exposure to all types of weather and hazardous construction sites.
