Position Description

Seattle Public Utilities is seeking a n Assistant Civil Engineer to join the Capital Improvement Project (CIP) Design Section of SPU’s Project Delivery and Engineering Branch. This position will provide engineering design and support for construction and operation of projects primarily relating to wastewater and drinking water throughout SPU’s systems. Depending on business needs , work could also include combined sewer overflow, drainage, and solid waste facilit y projects . This position will work under the supervision of licensed professional engineers to help deliver critical infrastructure projects that serve Seattle's communities. This is an entry-level position.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering design for wastewater and water projects under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer. Typical tasks include engineering calculations, preparation of engineering drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports.
  • Provide support to SPU Utilities Operations and Maintenance staff in the operation, troubleshooting, and optimization of existing infrastructure across all of SPU's lines of business, under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer.
  • Assist in the assessment of existing SPU infrastructure and develop recommended scopes of work for capital improvement projects, under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer.
  • Support consultant-designed utility projects as an owner’s representative and reviewer, under the supervision of a licensed engineer.
  • Support regulatory compliance efforts and help ensure projects meet all applicable local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Participate in emergency response activities when needed to maintain critical infrastructure service

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology; or other combinations of education and/or experience which provides preparation to do professional civil engineering work.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.
  • Field assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites.
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Overnight travel may be required.

License, Certification and Other Requirements: Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Desired Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices, including water resources and engineering hydraulics in gravity and pressurized pipelines.
  • Basic proficiency with engineering software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS).
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and teams.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in team environments.
  • Appreciation for the importance of public service and equity in the delivery of utility services.
  • Professional development toward future engineering licensure preferred.

Additional Information

Workplace Schedule/Environment:

  • This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Starting January 2, 2025, City employees will have the option to work remotely two days a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.
  • Work is performed both in an office environment and in a public setting.

The full salary range for this position is $ 47.45 - $51.30 per hour.
