SDOT is excited to announce a new Civil Engineering Assistant opportunity. This position has primary accountability for delivering bicycle safety projects that are prioritized by the frequency and severity of collisions, geographic equity, which is assessed through Race and Social Justice Initiative metrics, and with guidance from the prioritization in the 2024 Seattle Transportation Plan and 2017 Trails Upgrade Plan. This position conducts planning, project development, and design for projects under the Bicycle Program. This position is also tasked with helping implement the Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Analysis (BPSA) priorities and Vision Zero safety goals, which help SDOT proactively inform safety improvements for people walking, biking, and rolling. Job Responsibilities
- Deliver Bike spot projects for crew delivery identified in the City’s Seattle Transportation Plan and Trails Upgrade Plan to improve safety on our bike trail network.
- Implement Bike Barrier Hardening and Maintenance, a program tasked with replacing flexible delineators in protected bike lanes with physical barriers to enhance protection for cyclists and reduce the City’s ongoing maintenance costs.
- Support planning, project development, and design for large capital projects stemming from the Bicycle Program by collecting field data, helping organize presentations, and drafting various design alternatives for analysis and review by SDOT staff or other agencies in the design process.
- Review collision data to determine safety countermeasures at High Collision Locations, and review designs from other teams to ensure they meet bike safety standards.
- Conduct safety research to help prevent serious and fatal collisions and incorporate the latest design standards into best practices and project recommendations for various multi-modal projects.
- Coordinate project design with partners like King County Metro, Seattle Public Utilities, Seattle City Light, Sound Transit, and private entities.
- Conduct field work in various weather conditions, like assessing linear bike and scooter share transportation facilities and documenting their various maintenance needs, and performing layout and scoping for bike racks, signs, markings, and other bike-related assets in the public right-of-way.
- Respond to public inquiries on various traffic safety and operational concerns.
- Provide content and participate in public outreach processes.
- Actively support the department’s goals for diversity and social justice, in line with the City’s Race and Social Justice Initiative.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology.
OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position's duties.
Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or can describe comparable experience:
- Knowledge and experience with AutoCAD.
- Familiarity with City of Seattle, WSDOT, AASHTO, and NACTO pedestrian and bicycle design standards.
- Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate, preferred
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational, time-management, and customer service skills.
- Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Effective oral and written communication and customer service; proven ability to communicate information clearly, concisely, and accurately to all staff, contractors, vendors, and other departments.
- Effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.
- Work is typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 3 days of the work is completed in a city office, and 2 days of the work is completed remotely in a regular 40-hour work week.
- Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
