Position Description

The Department of Education & Early Learning’s (DEEL) mission is to ensure that all Seattle children have the greatest opportunity to succeed in school and in life, ultimately helping scholars graduate from school, ready for college, and a career. As part of this mission, DEEL is hosting the Upward Bound program. Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance and graduation. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to prepare students for the next academic year and increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

We are looking for a Math tutor to support the Upward Bound Program in Seattle. In this role, you will be responsible for mentoring, tutoring, and providing instructional aid to support 9th - 12th grade students enrolled in the 6-week summer program. You will work with the Academic Youth Counselor and Youth Instructors, mentoring students facing educational barriers to progress through the academic pathway so that they may succeed in high school and beyond. This position will provide you with the opportunity to build leadership skills and gain experience in working with diverse youth from underserved communities. Tutors will support the 6-week summer program and may have the opportunity to continue to provide part-time tutoring services throughout the following school year.

Job Responsibilities

The main day-to-day work of the individual(s) in this position is to mentor, tutor, and serve as instructional aide to support 9th-12th graders enrolled in the City of Seattle Upward Bound Program. Tutors will support the 6-week summer program and may have the opportunity to continue to provide part-time tutoring services throughout the following school year.

Here's what you’ll be doing to support the Upward Bound program:

  • Provide one-to-one or small group tutoring, remotely or in-person to 9th-12th grade students in Math (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus).
  • Support leadership development, college and career readiness, goal setting, career exploration and life skills by developing and conducting workshops remotely or in person.
  • Maintain accurate records of tutoring and workshop activities by students and volunteers.

You will be most successful in this role with the following experiences:

  • Working in one or more the following math skills area (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus).
  • Experience as a successful Upward Bound program participant or participant in a similar program that understands and can support students in developing the skills and knowledge for success in achieving personal, postsecondary, and career goals.
  • Experience in developing workshops that will support students in gaining academic and life skills to succeed in high school, transition to postsecondary, graduate from college, and transition into a career.
  • Is responsible, has strong interpersonal and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Equivalent of two years of successful college-level coursework or an Associate’s degree.

OR

  • Equivalent of two years of college-level coursework.

Additional Information

These temporary non-benefits eligible positions are eligible for overtime and are classified as a Yth Suprv 1 and will be expected to start on June 4, 2025 and end on August 12, 2025.

The pay rate for this position is $24.01 - $24.01 per hour. Employees will be given premium pay in lieu of benefits.

The Upward Bound summer program takes place on the Seattle University campus with the Upward Bound Tutors expected to work Monday through Thursday, 7:45 AM—4:00 PM.

Interviews for these temporary positions are tentatively scheduled for May 21-22, 2025.

Individuals selected to fill these temporary positions may be eligible to receive Language Premium Pay (SMC 4.20.360), which provides a $200.00 monthly stipend to qualified bilingual employees who are properly evaluated and assigned to provide direct communication in-language, interpretation, or translation services to the public on behalf of the City of Seattle.
