What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nathan Hale High School - Home School Coordinator- 1.0 FTE position at Seattle Public Schools?
The person filling this role with be joining a strong team dedicated to serving our multicultural and multilingual population. For this position, a high level of Spanish fluency is needed. Additionally, we are seeking applicants with a high level of cultural competency and experience working with bilingual immigrant and refugee students and families. The ability to partner and collaborate with families to create solutions to any barriers to fully participate in school is essential.
- Acts as a liaison between families and District (e.g. telephone contacts, scheduled conferences at school and/or home visits, inform parents of students progress, etc.) for the purpose of providing information ensuring the students and families information is explained, shared, and understood by all involved.
- Assists parents, families, and students (e.g. maintain contact, develop student awareness of educational responsibilities, monitor academic achievement/attendance, serve as a role model, tutors, etc.) for the purpose of promoting parental effectiveness and student achievement, while maintaining and effective relationship with all involved parties.
- Develops program support activities to foster awareness of educational goals for the purpose of providing information to parents and the community of the educational goals and coordinate support methods and services.
- Facilitates communication between a variety of persons (e.g. students, parents, families, school staff, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining liaison with school staff, as appropriate to promote understanding of the needs of at-risk students and their families, while working with school staff to identify target populations.
- Identifies students in need of tutoring (e.g. schedules/coordinates tutor request and assignments, monitors tutoring assignments, etc.) for the purpose of providing assistance in learning, while monitoring the effectiveness and identify needed changes.
- Intervenes in emergency situations as appropriate for the purpose of providing reports and follow -up services to emergency situations.
- Maintains a variety of records both manual and electronic (e.g. daily log of activities, program participation, progress, contact records, etc.) for the purpose of providing required information and/or documentation.
- Oversees students in a variety of settings (e.g. lunchroom, classroom, playground, hallways, etc.) for the purpose of providing supervision when needed.
- Participates in a variety of functions, as assigned, (e.g. workshops, meetings, community teams, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or presenting information related to family and child support services.
- Performs related duties consistent with the scope of the position.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
- Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
- Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: concepts of grammar and punctuation; stages of child development; and community resources, Federal and State education programs.
- Skills are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
- Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in and office setting; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and using pertinent software applications.
- Ability is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment.
- Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods.
- Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment.

- Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited.

High school diploma or equivalent and at least one of the following:
(a) Have received a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment as published by PESB; or
(b) Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university; or
(c) Have earned seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the one hundred level or higher at an accredited college or university; or
(d) Have completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
One (1) year of related work experience working with students and parents in a community or school setting.
Approved additional qualifying work experience may substitute for the education requirement.
CERTIFICATES & LICENSES:
Valid State of Washington Driver's License.
CLEARANCES:
Criminal Justice Fingerprint and Background Clearance.
