Seattle Roots Community Health is a not-for-profit organization that operates two primary care clinics, an After-Hours Clinic, two School-Based Health Centers, a low barrier Medication-assisted treatment clinic, and a Dental Clinic. Our Carolyn Downs Family Medical Center was founded in 1970 by the Seattle Black Panther Party in Seattle’s Central District. Our Country Doctor Community Clinic was established in 1971 by residents of the Capitol Hill neighborhood in conjunction with the Seattle Liberation Front. Job Summary
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides essential support to nursing staff in delivering direct patient care. This role includes assisting patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), taking vital signs, providing basic patient comfort, and ensuring the safety and well-being of patients. The CNA works closely with Registered Nurses (RNs) and other healthcare professionals to support patients' physical and emotional needs in a healthcare setting.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care and Support:
• Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, eating, and mobility.
• Take and record vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiratory rate) and report any significant changes to nursing staff.
• Provide assistance to patients with positioning, turning, and repositioning to prevent bedsores and promote comfort.
• Assist with feeding, ensuring that patients are receiving adequate nutrition based on their dietary needs and restrictions.
• Provide emotional support to patients, offering companionship and reassurance as needed.
• Ensure that patients are comfortable and assist with making their environment clean and pleasant.
Clinical Assistance and Documentation:
• Document patient information in electronic health records (EHR) or paper charts as required, including vital signs, ADLs, and observations.
• Assist nurses with medical procedures and treatments as directed, ensuring that infection control protocols are followed.
• Maintain accurate and updated patient records to ensure proper documentation of care provided and any changes in condition.
• Monitor patients for changes in their condition, report concerns, and escalate issues to the nursing team as necessary.
• Assist with preparing patients for exams, tests, and procedures, ensuring comfort and clarity in instructions.
Patient Safety and Infection Control:
• Ensure patient safety by maintaining a clean, secure, and organized environment.
• Follow infection control practices, including proper hand hygiene, using personal protective equipment (PPE), and sterilizing equipment.
• Ensure patients' beds are made appropriately, ensuring that the bedding is clean and free of wrinkles to promote comfort and prevent skin breakdown.
• Help patients with ambulation, using proper techniques to ensure their safety and reduce the risk of falls.
• Assist with patient transfers, utilizing safe lifting techniques and equipment to prevent injury.
Team Collaboration and Communication:
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team, ensuring that patients' needs are met promptly.
• Work under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs) and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide optimal care.
• Report any changes in patient condition, behavioral observations, or concerns to the appropriate nursing staff or physician.
• Participate in team meetings and collaborate in care planning for individual patients.
General Duties:
• Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA guidelines in all aspects of patient care and documentation.
• Assist with the transportation of patients to different departments or locations within the facility as needed.
• Ensure patient privacy and dignity at all times when assisting with personal care tasks.
• Perform other duties as assigned by nursing staff to support patient care and facility operations.
Essential Functions:
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting (up to 50 pounds) to assist patients with mobility and positioning.
• Frequent use of office equipment (e.g., computers, phones) for documenting patient care and communication.
• Occasional travel within the healthcare facility for patient transfers or other responsibilities.
• Adequate hearing, vision, and manual dexterity to communicate with patients, take vital signs, and perform care tasks effectively.
• Regular and reliable attendance to provide consistent and high-quality patient care.
Qualifications
Education & Training:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of an accredited Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program.
Licensure & Certification:
- Must hold a current, valid Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification in the state of employment.
- CPR and First Aid certification required (or to be completed upon hire).
Experience & Skills
- Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred, but not required.
- Knowledge of basic patient care, hygiene, and safety practices.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare staff.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with a compassionate and empathetic demeanor.
