Seaward Services is seeking a Harbor Engineer for our Narragansett Bay Test Facility operation in Newport, RI.

About the Opportunity:

We are seeking a skilled and experienced marine mechanic to join our team as a Harbor Engineer at the Narragansett Bay Test Facility, in Newport, RI. As the Harbor Engineer, you will be responsible for the proper maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of vessels including, RHIB’s, workboats, patrol boats, dive boats, and the 100’ R/V Transporter. You will serve as a subject matter expert on gas engines, diesel engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, HVAC, Electrical, and MSD’s. You will also be responsible for assisting with rigging operations, plus assisting with the proper maintenance and inspection of rigging equipment. You will also provide consistent reporting to the government on emergent issues, maintenance, and operational status of government owned assets. You will play a vital role in performing preventative maintenance to ensure the vessels remain operable for test range activity. This is a leadership role that may include shoreside managerial duties to ensure the proper performance of all government contract requirements. Work will typically occur Monday-Friday between 0600-1700, typically for no longer than 8 hours with some underway time during normal operating hours.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintenance will be required on various vessels including RHIB’s, workboats, patrol boats, dive boats, and a 100’ R/V. Equipment includes, but is not limited to: 60 series Detroit/MTU main diesel engine, 25-30 KW diesel generators, 24 & 12 volt systems, hydraulic systems, marine sanitation systems, and HVAC systems.
  • Maintenance will also include boat trailers, tools, equipment, and other materials.
  • Maintain government shipboard Weight Handling Equipment e.g. cranes, davits, etc.
  • Work will be tracked using the Navy Planned Maintenance System.
  • Assist with inventory and the preparation of monthly inventory report.
  • Assist with monthly report that details the operational status and preventative or corrective maintenance for each asset.
  • Operate and update the government provided maintenance work control system software to schedule and track routine preventative and non-routine corrective maintenance.
  • Perform routine schedule and unscheduled maintenance on all government assets.
  • Maintain all government assets in a full mission capable status.
  • Provide weekly maintenance accomplishment reports.
  • Adhere to and comply with company policies and USCG and environmental regulations.
  • Overhaul, maintain, and repair a variety of outboard small boat engines.
  • Provide and/or assist with training.
  • Assemble rigging to lift and move equipment or material on board the vessel.
  • Perform any duty that may be required as part of training.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of all working areas and vessel, including proper procedures for oils and fuel.
  • Responsible for imparting knowledge about the specific features, characteristics, and procedures of vessels operations to crew members and the orientation of all new personnel on board the vessel.
  • Additional job duties as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • 5 years experience repairing and maintaining in-water vessels, including experience with inboard and outboard engines
  • 5 years experience repairing and maintaining auxiliary equipment such as generators, cooling systems, etc.
  • Valid MMC with a minimum of QMED endorsement or higher
  • Valid U.S. Passport
  • Valid TWIC Card
  • Ability to pass a physical exam
  • Ability to pass a written exam
