JOB SUMMARY: Provide nutrition education to those seeking food assistance in primarily community-based settings, as well as remotely in Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina’s Central Region supported by SNAP-Ed. SNAP-Ed is the nutrition education and obesity prevention component of the SNAP Benefits program, formerly known as Food Stamps.
o Provide nutrition education to those seeking food assistance such as youth, adults, and families in community-based settings, throughout Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina’s service area, supported by SNAP-Ed.
- Support and build relationships with partner agencies across Second Harvest Food Bank’s service area to facilitate a collaborative approach in serving participants to increase healthy eating and physical activity.
o Organize and deliver community-based nutrition education programs, including recipe demonstrations and hands-on cooking courses such as Cooking Matters®, Leah’s Pantry Food Smarts, and Stay Strong Stay Healthy (SSSH). Facilitate outreach opportunities within Second Harvest Food Bank’s service area to engage and educate diverse audiences.
o Deliver engaging and interactive presentations that promote healthy eating, food resource management, cooking skills, meal preparation, and food safety, using innovative and accessible teaching methods.
o Facilitate virtual nutrition education sessions, including creating recipe demonstration videos, developing online content, and leading interactive workshops.
o Coordinate and manage all aspects of nutrition education programs, such as preparing course materials and equipment, selecting recipes, planning lessons and activities, recruiting participants, organizing in-class and take-home materials, and assigning roles to volunteers.
o Ensure the accurate collection and entry of program data, including pre- and post-course surveys and end-of-course evaluations. Maintain adherence to evaluation protocols to support effective program assessment and improvement.
- Extensive travel throughout the SHFB’s service area is required. NE must have reliable transportation and will be reimbursed mileage at the current federal rate.
- Attend all required meetings, including departmental staff meetings, monthly full staff meetings, regional SNAP-Ed conferences, and any additional meetings necessary to support program goals and organizational initiatives.
o Bachelor’s degree in nutrition science, public health, or related field.
o 1-3 years of nutrition education or community health experience.
o Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and relationship building skills.
o Excellent time management skills to prioritize work and maintain flexible schedules.
o Ability to prepare and deliver lessons to diverse groups of people ranging in different ages, abilities, and socio-economic backgrounds.
o Must have an interest in poverty, hunger, and non-profit work.
o Ability to adapt to different teaching environments (i.e. online and in-person settings and/or classrooms, mobile unit events, faith-based organizations, schools, farmers markets, community centers, etc.)
o Demonstrated ability to communicate orally clearly, concisely, and effectively, in writing and by telephone.
o Demonstrated ability to use technology (computer, tablets, and relevant software programs) to accurately input data, establish and maintain records and reports.
o Must always maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
o Previous experience teaching nutrition to adults and youth.
o Previous experience working in low-income communities.
- Be able to lift and carry a minimum of 25 pounds, with or without accommodation, including nutrition education equipment for conducting food demonstrations and cooking classes, education materials, and handouts for participants.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $43,000.00 - $44,000.00 per year
