SUMMARY:
The Secondary Math & Science Teacher provides instruction in both math and science to middle and high school students, using teaching techniques aligned with Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and school-established learning objectives. This educator fosters a culturally responsive, student-centered learning environment, tailored to meet the diverse needs of Native American students.
ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS:
Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School, Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate among Puyallup tribal youth. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in Washington State and one of over 200 tribal schools across the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.

Prepare and deliver lessons in math and science that align with Common Core and NGSS, integrating best practices and differentiation strategies.

Create a positive and effective classroom environment conducive to learning.

Establish and communicate clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.

Administer classroom-based assessments and standardized tests, including End-of-Course (EOC) exams.

Maintain consistent communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress through conferences, phone calls, and grade updates.

Identify student needs and work with professional staff to support academic, behavioral, or emotional challenges.

Maintain professional competence through ongoing professional development and participation in school-provided in-service opportunities.

Supervise students during non-classroom activities within the school day.

Refer students with special needs in accordance with federal guidelines (Public Law 94-142).

Participate in school committees and student activity sponsorship.

Work collaboratively with paraeducators and other staff.

Perform additional duties as assigned by the administrator.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in Education.
-
Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsements in both Math and Science.

Successful teaching and/or student-teaching experience at the secondary level.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience working with Native American or other culturally diverse student populations.

Familiarity with or training in AVID, Responsive Classroom, Trauma-Informed Practices, Restorative Practices, Project GLAD, and Project-Based Learning.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to Building Administrator or designee.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods, frequently reach with arms and hands, and regularly lift/move up to 10 pounds (occasionally up to 50 pounds, using a two-person or mechanical lift as needed). Frequent bending, kneeling, and fine motor manipulation required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is primarily indoors in a classroom setting. Occasional exposure to visual displays. Noise level is generally moderate.
