Security Benefit is searching for an experienced attorney to provide expert legal guidance on a wide range of corporate and regulatory legal matters and advance the Company’s regulatory agenda, primarily with state regulators, at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), and other external industry, policy and regulatory organizations. You will report to the Senior Vice President & General Counsel.

Position Overview & Responsibilities
As a senior member of the Law Department, you will serve on the leadership team of the Law Department and work with other attorneys and legal analysts to advise on a wide range of regulatory, corporate and governance legal matters:
Monitor and Influence Regulatory Developments. Collaborate with the Finance department, Government Affairs, and external counsel/consultants to monitor and influence regulatory proposals and changes at both state and national levels.
Oversee Regulatory Change Management and Implementation. Partner with internal stakeholders to effectively communicate and implement regulatory changes across the organization in a timely manner.
Engage with Regulatory Authorities. Lead communications and manage engagement with state insurance department regulators on matters such as regulatory filings (e.g., Form B, Form D), examinations, and other inquiries.
Support Regulatory Examinations. Collaborate with internal teams to manage and respond to insurance regulatory examinations and inquiries.
Advocate for the Company’s Interests. Partner with the Head of Government Affairs to lobby state and federal officials, actively represent the company in industry and regulatory organizations, and advocate for its interests.
Support Strategic Transactions. Provide legal guidance on regulatory issues in connection with reinsurance treaties, strategic investments, capital markets transactions, and other strategic initiatives.
Draft and Negotiate Reinsurance Agreements. Offer legal counsel on insurance and reinsurance matters, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating reinsurance contracts and related agreements and counsel on regulatory compliance related to reinsurance activities.
Enhance Corporate Governance: Assist in corporate governance, risk management, and compliance activities.
General Corporate Legal Support: Oversee a range of corporate legal matters, including governance and risk management, to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
Required Experience and Skills
10-15 years of legal experience, including 5 years with a focus on insurance and/or regulatory matters
JD from an accredited law school and member in good standing of a state bar, with the ability to become licensed for in-house practice in Kansas (if not already)
Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and produce high-quality, business-friendly legal work
Commitment to producing excellent, practical, and solution-oriented legal work product and timely, personable client service
Extremely strong oral and written communication skills, including an ability to effectively communicate complicated legal and regulatory concepts to stakeholders
Dedication to community involvement and “giving back”
Preferred Experience and Skills
Deep knowledge of the insurance regulatory landscape and established connections with regulators and insurance industry professionals
Experience providing strategic and commercial legal counsel and governance-related guidance to executives and other senior business leaders
Track record of success leading legal engagement with insurance department exams and inquiries along with positive history of regular and direct interaction with regulators
Knowledge of and experience applying and advising on insurance and securities laws as applicable to investments and insurance holding companies, particularly the Kansas Insurance Holding Company Act
Location
The position will be based out of SBLIC’s headquarters in Topeka, KS, with occasional domestic travel to conferences and meetings. Associates are working in a hybrid environment with both remote and on-site work.
