What are the responsibilities and job description for the Battalion Chief position at Security Fire Protection District?
General Description and Essential Duties:
- Responds to emergency calls as an incident commander for the fire department, ensuring mitigation of the emergency incident.
- Responds to alarms and protects life and property through the prevention and extinguishment of fires instruct and contribute in the preservation of evidence to determine cause and origin.
- This is an “at will” position that serves as a direct report to the deputy fire chief.
- Has direct supervision of assigned personnel ensuring appropriate staffing, equipment, and utilization for emergency responses.
- Performs the full range of supervisory responsibilities to include; mentoring, coaching, career growth, disciplinary actions, conducting appraisals and counseling.
- Exercises the full range of human resource applications to ensure growth and development of assigned personnel.
- Remains current on the principles, practices, and new developments in the field of fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical, and hazardous materials; incorporates new developments as appropriate.
- Ensures the use of safety equipment for assigned personnel eliminating or minimizing injuries in the workplace.

Minimum Qualifications:
- CO, IFSAC, or Pro-Board Fire Firefighter II and Fire Officer I (preferred).
- Able to obtain with 12 months and maintain, CO, IFSAC, or Pro-Board Fire Instructor I (preferred).
- CO, IFSAC, or Pro-Board Fire Officer II to advance in the position (preferred).
- CO or National Registry EMT-IV, National Incident Management System (NIMS) 100, 200, 700, 800, and NWCG Red Card.
- Eight (8) years of career (paid) experience in a fire department.
- Three (3) years of career (paid) experience in a leadership role.
- Current Colorado driver’s license and copy of motor vehicle record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of modern fire suppression, prevention, and emergency medical services principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
- Ability to perform on computer-based applications to include, but not limited to; Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and outlook.
- Sound human resource and project management skills.
- Ability to communicate and work closely fellow officers, firefighters, local response partners, and the public.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
