Part-time Security
Job Summary
Security is an integral position responsible for representing the zoo and providing a safe and secure environment for all guests. Ensure enforcement of safety, first aid, and customer service for all daily activities that relate to our guests. This position is required to work some evenings and weekends. Majority of work is outdoors.

Primary Job Functions (list three with specific tasks listed)

Customer Service
  • Provide customer service to the zoo defined customers –co-workers, vendors, visitors & volunteers.
  • Train and assist when working with volunteers and interns.
  • Ensure public is safe while at zoo.
  • Monitor the North and South gates via the CCTV in the Monitoring Center.
  • Monitor CCTV in the Monitoring Center.
  • Answer calls in a professional manner, monitor for emergency alarms, and gather necessary caller information. Dispatch information as needed.
  • Attend meetings to discuss all aspects of the zoo in order to keep customers informed properly and to resolve concerns and learn of new procedures or policies.
  • Security will handle all situations in a calm, professional manner, and attempt to find an appropriate solution for the situation.
  • Form and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, customers, and team participants
  • Ability to maintain a pleasant demeanor and positive attitude while working under any conditions.
Security
  • Act as first responder on the grounds; react to all emergencies, including but not limited to: severe weather, first aid, and lost child situations.
  • Act as a visible deterrent while providing guest control, which may involve challenging situations such as protecting life, health, and property.
  • Act as visible deterrent for property protection.
  • Coordinate requests and information with the incident commander, as assigned by the Security & Safety Manager or Asst. Security Manager.
  • Recognize and respond to hazards and monitor the grounds for guest behavior and safety concerns.
  • Correct behavior in a courteous and expedient manner in accordance to Zoo policies.
  • Maintain the ability to work with individuals from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
  • Respond quickly, in a safe and timely manner to calls for assistance, medical calls, disturbances, fire alarm reports, and/or reports of disruptive behavior within the Zoo complex.
  • Provide necessary assistance to any guests, contact law enforcement agencies as required, serve as liaison to law enforcement and emergency responders in the absence or at the direction of the Security & Safety Manager or Asst. Security Manager(s).
Public Areas/Equipment
  • Ensure that all public areas are open and closed daily.
  • Patrol and provide a thorough check of the entire Zoo property, while also assisting with parking lot traffic and crowd control.
  • Provide theft surveillance of all buildings, putting an emphasis on merchandise areas.
  • Report native wildlife activity as assigned.
  • Operate all vehicles and equipment in a safe and informative manner.
  • Provide security escort for all areas of financial business on grounds, as requested.
  • Report all unsafe or hazards in guest areas.
  • Listen and respond to guest requests or concerns in a timely manner.
  • Provide direction in crisis situations, defuse potentially violent situations.
  • Formulate reports or document certain incidents by logging required counts on the appropriate forms
Secondary Job Functions
  • Complete required training and safely operate all zoo required equipment for completion of job duties.
  • Use time efficiently to complete assigned tasks. Actively seek ways to streamline processes and stay open to new ideas and approaches.
  • Represent the Zoo and/or Sedgwick County at various offsite events, such as regional, national, and international conferences, meetings, community events, outreach programs, etc.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • 18 years in age.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid US driver’s license without restrictions.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends.
  • Must be available three days a week within all Zoo operating hours.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • First Aid & CPR Training (training will be provided within first 10 months or employment).
Working Environment/Conditions
The employee is subject to activities that occur in both inside and outside environmental conditions. The employee is subject to any potential hazards of working in a zoo. The employee is subject to potential hazards of working with and near dangerous animals. The employee may be exposed to zoonotic diseases. Employee must be able to work a schedule that may involve working weekends, holidays, or after regular work shifts.
Physical requirements
Physical ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs. Repetitive bending/reaching as needed daily. Frequently bends, stoops for filing and lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods within indoor and outdoor environments. The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as viewing a computer terminal or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
