What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Farm Based Educator position at Seed Song Farm and Center?
Spend the summer (or a week in April) working outdoors with a team of educators on a sustainable, community farm.
Seed Song Center seeks individuals who are interested in observing the natural interests of children and supporting them in extending that curiosity and excitement by building farm and nature based projects and activities around their interests.
Seed Song’s educational programs are hands-on and child-centered. Programming is rooted in the seasons and the rhythms of a working agroecological farm. Common activities the team of educators facilitate include caring for farm animals, seeding and harvesting veggies, farm fresh snack-making, planting trees, observing wild pollinators, nature based arts and crafts, storytelling and music making.
Currently hiring for Full-Time positions working with youth ages 4 through 15 in our primarily outdoor camp program.
Other seasonal work opportunities include field trips, after school and day programs, and family fun weekends.
About Seed Song Farm and Center: The Farm and Center are located on 215 acres of farm and forest bordered by the Esopus Creek just outside of Kingston, New York. Farm programs include a CSA program, farm store, community land plots and food justice initiatives.
Start Date: Spring Break Camp - Training Thursday, April 10th Camp runs: April 14 - April 18
Summer Camp - Mandatory Training Begins Tuesday June 24 End Date: August 29
Compensation: $15.50 - $17.50 per hour depending on experience Weekly Hours: 35-40 Additional Benefits:
● Participate in the Mid-Hudson Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training (CRAFT) program. All team members have the opportunity to participate in CRAFT events through the season.
Expectations
● Enthusiasm for working with and caring for children in a mostly outdoor setting
● Carry out schedule of themed daily activities with a group of up to 12 children
● Maintain tidy and organized activity spaces
● Report any injuries or illness to Camp Director
● Participate in Daily Team De-briefings
Qualification Requirements:
● Prior experience working with children and/or working at a Summer Camp
● Prior experience working outdoors and/or working on a farm, gardening
● Passionate about farms and food
● *Reliable transportation to and from the farm (*on farm housing is an option with this position)
Additional Beneficial Skills and Qualifications:
● Music making and art skills
● Fluency in Spanish language
● Conflict Resolution and/or Non Violent Communication Skills
● First Aid Certification(s)
● Experience in progressive educational philosophies and practices
