TITLE: Middle School Library Instructional Aide
TYPE OF POSITION: Full time (1.0); 2024-2025 school year; salary commensurate with experience and education as set forth in the agreement between the School Committee of the Town of Seekonk and Local 1701, State Council 93, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO
START DATE: Approx. January 10, 2025
PAY RANGE: $19.27 to $24.89, depending on education and experience
LOCATION: Hurley Middle School
REPORTS TO: Principal and/or Immediate Teacher
The Middle School Library Instructional Aide assists teachers and/or building principals in the supervision of students in the classroom during instructional periods and throughout the school environment as designated by the principal or teacher.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To be considered qualified for this position, candidates must minimally have the following:
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree and/or passing score on Paraprofessional Assessment
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with children and adults.
- Ability to relate well with students, colleagues, parents, and staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS which include but are not limited to:
TYPICAL DUTIES:
- Under the supervision of a certified teacher, prepares for classroom activities.
- Works individually or in small groups of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
- Assists the teacher in providing assistance to individual children in need of special assistance.
- Provides assistance in independent, enrichment and/or remedial work set up by the teacher.
- Assists in the overall school library functions by maintaining the SAILS library catalog; processing, circulating, and shelving books and various learning materials; stamping, labeling, mending, and cleaning library books and other learning resources; and performing regular inventories.
- Provides guidance and assistance to students in the selection of books and in using other library resources.
- Adds library copies into a database utilizing the SAILS library system.
- Presents educational information to students under the supervision of the librarian or a qualified classroom teacher.
- Provides assistance to students in accessing research materials to support units of study. Assists parents with accessing library services for students.
- Assists the Teacher Librarian or Coordinating Field Librarian in the selection and ordering of library materials.
- Helps maintain an orderly and functional room environment conducive to learning.
- May assist in coordinating events such as book fairs and planning activities that encourages and motivates students to read.
- May read-aloud and provide book talks to groups of students. Performs related duties as assigned.
- Participates in in-service training programs, when appropriate.
- To complete other tasks designated by the individual supervisor.
- Answer telephone calls
- Check in and process magazines and newspapers
- Open and sort mail
- Shred documents
- Check in and process interlibrary loans requests and inform patrons of their arrival
- Fill interlibrary loan requests
- Process overdue notices and inform patrons of overdue materials
- Notify the librarian when supplies are needed and order them
- Request supplies through online software
- Maintain library schedule calendar
- Maintain and update equipment sign out log
- Book classes and events taking place in the Library/Media Center
- Process and catalog all library purchases
