The Union has approximately 425 staff in sixteen offices from Boston to Miami. 32BJ SEIU represents over 175,000 property service workers including janitors, security officers, airport workers, and food service employees in 11 states and Washington, DC. 32BJ is an affiliate of SEIU, the Service Employees International Union, which has 2 million members dedicated to raising industry standards and making life better for all working families and communities. 32BJ SEIU’s headquarters are in New York City.
ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Political Organizer is based in Newark, NJ and is responsible for aspects of the Union’s political work in Jersey City, NJ. The Political Organizer is chiefly tasked with advancing the Union's campaign objectives, bolstering its political influence, and shaping its political agenda in Jersey City as the 2025 City Council and Mayoral elections approach. Furthermore, the Political Organizer is instrumental in implementing segments of the Union's legislative agenda, operating under the guidance and oversight of the NJ Political Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinating the continued development of Jersey City legislative and community engagement priorities based on the union’s organizing goals.
- Building and maintaining positive relationships with elected officials, community and labor leaders, and other potential coalition partners in Jersey City.
- Working with the NJ Political Director to implement city-wide public policy and political agenda.
- Monitoring and coordinating aspects of legislative and policy reform initiatives that effect the Union, worker’s rights, and social justice.
- Planning events to engage workers in the political work of the union.
- Planning and coordinating campaign activities, grassroots lobbying, phone banking and events for our campaigns as needed.
- Supporting campaign tactics, including rallies, press events and targeted member activity.
- Providing briefings and education materials for staff and members around legislative and electoral work.
- Other duties in support of the department, campaigns or the Union as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 2-3 years of experience in worker or community organizing, legislative, or electoral campaigns.
- Experience working with directly impacted people.
- Ability to train and teach people of varying skillsets around economic and social justice issues.
- Ability to plan and execute large-scale events with the support of the Political Director.
- Ability to design and implement powerful and effective campaign plans with the support of the Political Director.
- Excellent communications skills and experience building strong working relationships with various stakeholders including elected officials, faith-based institutions, civic organizations, and other community groups.
- Fluent written and oral Spanish preferred but not required.
- The ability and willingness to travel and to work long hours, including evenings and weekends as campaigns require.
- This position requires travel to various locations throughout NJ, a valid driver’s license and car with insurance is preferred.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The salary for this role is $63,314.25. 32BJ offers a generous benefits package that includes a $200 per week car stipend or a $75 per week transit stipend, fully employer-paid medical, dental and vision plan, for full-time employees and their qualified dependents. We offer retirement benefits, including a defined benefit pension plan and 401K. 32BJ offers paid time off including three weeks’ vacation, eleven holidays, twelve sick days and four personal days. The Union currently offers a remote work policy of one remote day per week at the discretion of the manager.
