Purpose:This position is based in SEIU’s Strategic Initiatives Department, supporting the Property Services Division. The successful candidate will join a team of field researchers and campaigners and will use external data sources, including public and industry data, to create analyses that will drive our campaigns forward and advance campaign strategy . The ideal candidate will be campaign savvy, brave and curious with coding, insightful in their analysis, and have a history of managing multiple concurrent projects to successful outcomes.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: (Any one position may not include all of the specific duties and responsibilities listed. Examples provide a general summary of the work required and should not be treated as a total and complete list of expected duties to be performed by employees in the classification.)
- Use external data sources to create analyses that assist IU and Local campaign teams in new organizing campaigns.
- Administers research data sources and other technologies in service of Property Services’ external organizing efforts. Perform regular maintenance of research databases including data cleanup, data maintenance, database loads and related data preparation activities.
- Provides guidance and advice to SEIU locals on how to use existing data technology in external organizing campaigns.
- Represents SEIU in internal and external forums and maintains relations with SEIU locals.
- Integrates internal and external data sources in order to provide enhanced analysis on our industries. This includes working with large datasets to model patterns, wage data, and other information to understand Property Services industries and issues impacting service workers.
- Performs other duties as assigned in support of the work of the Strategy Initiatives Department and the Property Services Division campaigns.
Contacts: Includes SEIU and affiliate staff and experts on data, marketing and organizing best practices.
Direction and Decision Making: This position reports to the Assistant Director for Research for the Property Services Division.
Education and Experience: At least three (3) years of political, issue or union internal and external organizing campaigns experience or at least one (1) year experience in statistics or data analysis or, a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Knowledge of labor unions and how local unions operate
- Proficiency in SQL and demonstrated experience creating scripts, views and stored procedures.
- Experience with (or willingness to develop skills in) Python.
- Knowledge of database maintenance and administrative functions.
- Knowledge of relational databases design and practices.
- Ability to work with or maintain data sets in various formats, including cleaning data and maintaining accuracy of the data
- Ability or willingness to learn data gathering processes like web scraping
- Ability to make public records requests for data, track requests, and follow up as needed
- Ability to work with both technical staff and organizing staff
- Knowledge of working on political, internal, and external organizing campaigns
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Physical Requirements: Work is generally performed in an office setting. Long and extended hours and some travel required.
Probationary Period: Twelve (12) months
