PURPOSE: This position is responsible for all aspects of developing and implementing the overall strategy and direction for the Division’s member strength work, offense program, and other internal organizing campaigns/ programs.

In collaboration with the Deputy Director, directs, plans, develops, and implements all aspects of the Public Services Division Offense program. The priority is with selected locals but the Director will be responsible for creating layers of engagement for all Locals as the program develops.

  • Responsible for Directing the Division plan for implementing the national member strength campaign
  • Responsible for oversight of the Offense Will collaborate with the National Steering Committee, Division EC, EVP and Director to develop program goals and priorities.
  • The primary focus is assisting key locals in developing an offense program which:
    • ) Builds a member army of leaders and activists who lead and engage in an opposition movement;
    • ) Leverages organizing;
    • ) Contains a ‘Reach Every Member’ and inoculation component.
    • ) Engages in Coalition for long term power;
    • ) These projects will be evaluated through a racial justice lens.
  • Responsible for hiring, managing and supervising coordinators, research, communications, and field staff working for or under the direction of the Offense program or others as assigned to work on specific Offense projects. This may include staff assigned from other SEIU departments and programs, as well as local union staff assigned, and/or outside consultants.
  • Coordinates with other SEIU departments and programs, as well as Public Services Division staff on strategy, resource allocation, staffing and other issues related to the Offense Program campaigns and projects.

CONTACTS: Includes all levels of SEIU staff, local union elected leaders and staff, International Executive Board Members and Division Leaders, SEIU Executive Officers, Division staff, SEIU Area staff, and SEIU communications, politics, research, finance, ethics and LAJ/MLA staff.

DIRECTION & DECISION MAKING: This position reports to the Deputy Director of Internal Programs/ Organizing for the Public Services Division, and works with a high degree of independence. Must be able to work with International and local union-elected leaders and senior staff in complex and often politically sensitive situations.

Must have the ability to manage their own work and the work of others without close supervision. Requires a high level of judgment and ability to take initiative and work independently. Must use a high level of judgment and discretion in resolving problems within SEIU, the Division, and our Locals. Must maintain the highest level of confidentiality.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in political science, labor relations, or a related field, and at least five (5) - seven (7) years of combined local union representational, organizing, and back office administration experience with extensive staff supervisory responsibility, or a combination of education and experience that would provide the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of strategic campaign development
  • Thorough knowledge of organizing and member mobilization
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of polling, research, and communications strategies in
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in
  • Ability to lead teams across departments and containing both International & Local
  • Ability to recruit, develop and supervise
  • Ability to develop strategies, budgets, and implement
  • Ability to develop campaign plans, programs, logistics and
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and meet established
  • Ability to deal skillfully with Local Union elected leaders, senior staff, and
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Excel, Google Suite
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is generally performed in an office setting, but may be required to work in other settings conducive to performing the work required to complete the assignment, such as field assignments. Long and extended hours and travel required.
