We are seeking a Director of Business Development and Community Engagement to join our team in Miami, Florida team!

Self-Help is seeking a dynamic, impact-driven individual to help us grow in the Miami region. While this role is similar (in some ways) to business development, fundraising, and sales, our work is centered around building genuine, meaningful relationships and collaborations among mission-aligned organizations and individuals in the community to achieve triple-bottom-line results.

  • Researching prospective investors.
  • Engaging in the community and building authentic relationships with organizations and people across multiple sectors, e.g., housing, social justice, environmental justice, economic mobility, health equity, economic development, faith-based, and more.
  • Making requests for values aligned investments and following up.

WHAT You’ll Do

  • Develop and implement strategies for cultivating mission-aligned deposits to support credit union.
  • Directly develop and maintain critical relationships with socially responsible and mission-oriented investors. This includes but not limited to high-net-worth individuals, mutual funds, SRI funds, nonprofit organizations, faith-based organizations, foundations, banks, universities, financial advisors, and others.
  • Maintain familiarity with critical internal systems and a general understanding of the various products and services available across the organization.
  • Support the preparation of proposals and reports for potential depositors and investors including financial and impact due diligence requests and coordinate closely with our credit union leadership, finance team, DPI, executive and special projects staff, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Represent Self-Help through speaking engagements on conference panels, workshops, and webinars. Serve as a “face” of Self-Help to external audiences and partners, and work to increase Self-Help’s overall visibility in a way that supports increased deposit and loan cultivation.
  • In conjunction with leadership and Marketing-Communications develop and direct a targeted marketing strategy for deposit outreach, including print and digital/social media platforms.
  • Stay attuned to local social, economic, and political issues and community concerns, sharing the impact of those issues and concerns with appropriate Self-Help colleagues in a timely manner so appropriate strategies/actions to address may be developed.
  • Identify and explore opportunities for collaboration and initiating efforts to bring individuals and organizations together that can affect change. While bringing these groups together will set agendas, convene, and facilitate assembled groups, when necessary.
  • Maintain dialogue and make regular contact with key depositors and loan relationships.
  • Initiate and evaluate high impact opportunities through relationship building, asset mapping and other means. Engages potential partners interested in collaborating on mission-focused projects.
  • Identify commercial business lending opportunities in Self-Help’s key commercial lending sectors- Affordable Housing, Faith Based, Charter Schools, Clean Energy, and others within branch footprint.
  • Assist is identifying signature real estate development project in the community.
  • Manage existing and build new partnerships that further Self-Help’s small business lending goals.
  • Could involve collaboration and referrals to existing loan funds and/or other CDFIs. Market Self-Help’s loans to referral sources and potential borrowers through activities including 1-on-1 meetings and presentations.
  • Participate and support other team/cross-team projects and priorities, as needed.
  • Act as a change agent to drive Self-Help’s economic inclusion initiatives by integrating supplier diversity and the use of businesses owned by women and people of color in third party contracting and vendor management for relevant products and services.
  • Perform other duties as may be deemed necessary.

WHAT You’ll Need

  • Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of experience in community development, fundraising, financial services and/or other related fields, or an equivalent combination of experience and related advanced degrees.
  • Deep knowledge and expertise in financial services, marketing, and/or community development finance preferred.
  • Strong commitment to Self-Help’s mission: creating and protecting ownership and economic opportunity for all, especially people of color, women, rural residents and low-wealth families and communities.
  • Preference for working in organizations that place priority on teamwork and collaboration. Sensitivity to and experience with issues affecting low-wealth communities, and a desire to work in culturally- and socially diverse organization that strongly values collaboration.
  • Strong ability to build and/or expand networks and referral sources that lead to increased deposits and partnerships.
  • Comfort with presenting information, both orally and in writing, and responding to questions from the media, and/or high net worth individuals.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills and demonstrated attention to customer service and detailed follow through.
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends and travel as needed.
