Position Title: Instrumental Music Teacher
Department: Assigned School
Reports To: Principal
Supervises: None
Job Summary: To teach all interested students, beginning or advance, playing techniques of the musical instruments of their own selection within the scope of their respective abilities.
Typical Duties:
- Teaches advanced note reading, rhythms and theory.
- Exposes instrumental music students to good musical literature, both traditional and contemporary, playable within the limits of their technical abilities.
- Assists students in acquiring good listening habits.
- Constantly stresses good intonation and musical tone in rehearsal and performance.
- Teaches proper care of student and school owned instruments.
- Help students to develop a sense of group responsibility and cooperation.
- Provides students adequate opportunities to utilize their skills developed as an outgrowth of their class instruction and band or orchestra rehearsal experiences.
- Encourages talented students to participate further in community activities.
- Keeps an updated inventory of the school's musical instruments, equipment, textbooks and uniforms.
- Presents an annual night concert with invitations extended to parents and friends of the school.
- Performs for all school programs and activities in which the total school participates.
- Prepare and present reports as required by the Principal or Superintendent on the dates specified.
- Takes and active part in the school and community life.
- Cooperates fully with the principal of the school.
- Advises and assists the principal in the selection and purchase of appropriate musical instruments, equipment, uniforms, textbooks, materials and supplies.
- Works closely and cooperatively with the principal and faculty for the continual development of the instrumental music program in the school.
- Advises students and parents, when requested, on the type and quality of instruments to be purchased without reference to specific brand names or music stores.
- Attends all meetings called by the principal.
- If requested, assists the school scheduling committee in scheduling instrumental music students.
- Cooperates fully with other members of the instrumental corp in the furtherance of professional growth, the updating of instrumental music teaching materials, methods, and literature, and to assist in the overall improvement of instruction within the total school system.
- Participates in the in-service training program.
- Participates with the school board or orchestra, when requested and on a voluntary basis, in recognized civic and community activities when not in competition with local professional musicians.
- Develops within each student deep appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of music that will actively carry over to adulthood, either as a consumer or performer.
- Assists each student in recognizing their obligations and responsibilities to the school and community.
- Performs such other related duties as may be required.
Minimum Requirements:
- Alabama certification in Instrumental Music.
- M.A. degree preferred
- Ability to work well with students, parents, and community organizations in a manner that generates participation and interest in the instrumental music program.
