POSITION: GRADE I, II or III ALABAMA CERTIFIED WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR
PURPOSE: TO ESTABLISH AN ELIGIBLE REGISTER OR FILL PRESENT AND
FUTURE VACANCIES WITH THE WATERWORKS AND SEWER
BOARD OF THE CITY OF SELMA

JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Possesses and maintains Alabama Grade I, II or III Water Certification. Grade I and II willing to obtain Grade III.
- Maintains treatment plant chemicals, machines and equipment to provide potable water for residential, commercial and industrial use.
- Maintains remote facilities.
- Collects grab water samples from the plant and distribution system; when required performs chemical, physical, and bacteriological tests to assure water quality; submits samples for testing as required by state agencies.
- Determines and adds specified amounts of chemicals such as chlorine, fluoride, potassium permanganate, and lime.
- Loads lime machine with 50 pound bags of lime as needed.
- Calibrates equipment and adjusts chemical feeders for optimal treated water output.
- Maintains plant records, including operations logs, daily diaries, chemical inventories; compiles reports as required by regulatory agencies.
- Monitors charts, dials, pumps, chemical feeders, laboratory equipment, meters, and gauges in the laboratory to determine status of various functions of the plant; performs equipment and laboratory preventive maintenance duties.
- Performs minor repairs, operations adjustments, and preventive maintenance on plant equipment as needed.
- Reads and records chemical usage; adjusts chemical feeders; mixes chemicals; changes chlorine cylinders and refills chemical day storage containers as required.
- Checks motors and pumps for excessive noise and temperatures; reports problems to appropriate personnel.
- Ensures buildings and grounds are safe and secure.
- Performs grounds maintenance and housekeeping duties as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of a Grade I, II or III State of Alabama Certified License for Water Treatment.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alabama for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
