What are the responsibilities and job description for the Copy Editor position at Semafor?
About the Role
We’re looking for a talented editor and wordsmith with a global perspective and strong news judgment who can work effectively across Semafor’s news verticals and teams. The position would report to the Breaking News Editor, but would work principally with the Washington team, editing late copy from DC and helping assemble and produce Semafor’s Principal’s newsletter. The Copy Editor would also handle copy from the Breaking News team and take on editing and production duties across a range of other Semafor verticals and newsletters, including Americana, CEO Signal and Flagship’s Asia edition.
Subjects will run the gamut, including geopolitics, climate change, technology, science, culture, business and finance, and with a strong focus on US politics. Ideal candidates would bring experience in at least some of those areas as well as expertise in the pace and platforms of online breaking news and newsletter production, and help shape the voice and personality of Semafor.
This position can be based in Semafor's offices in New York City, Washington DC, or Remote but must be available to work Sun-Thurs 4 pm - midnight EST. The position requires a self-starter who can work independently and without supervision.
Candidates may be asked to complete a writing and editing exercise as part of the interview process, and must retain the right to work where they live.
What You’ll Do
- Help edit and produce Principals, our daily US politics newsletter, and other newsletters as needed, including CEO Signal, Americana and Flagship’s Asia edition.
- Monitor, edit and produce other late-breaking stories as needed.
- Collaborate closely and constantly across Semafor’s global newsroom and with the audience team
- Think constantly about story distribution and audiences, whether on social media or key partners and platforms
- Bring speedy insight to big news stories, and flair and personality to the writing
- Bring confidence to editing on everything from American politics to global climate and energy news, and be able to identify topics of most interest to readers
What We’re Looking For
- 4 years of relevant journalism experience, including on editing and newsletter production
- The ability to quickly understand and concisely summarize information on a broad range of topics
- A flair for elegant and sparkling writing on deadline
- A strong sense of initiative and responsibility and an ability to work independently and unsupervised.
- A passion for world events and issues and a broad interest in a wide range of subjects
- A broad reading list across conventional and unconventional sources
- Eagerness to be part of a dynamic work environment demanding initiative, flexibility, and a willingness to jump in wherever needed to help the team succeed
- Experience working with diverse teams with teammates from many different backgrounds.
Compensation: $70,000 - $75,000 USD/year
