Description
The Operating Room (OR) Charge Nurse will work with other members of Semmes Murphey Clinic to provide patient services and is expected to participate in the appropriate team activities with the objective of providing a high standard of patient and clinical service. The OR Charge Nurse’s primary responsibility is to ensure surgical cases are staffed appropriately, and the operating rooms, instruments, and other resources are ready according to the surgeon’s requirements. This position will routinely perform the duties of a circulating nurse and scrub in for cases.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Monitors the daily surgical schedule to ensure appropriate staffing, and that the operating rooms, instruments and other resources are ready according to the surgeon’s requirements
- Makes daily staff assignments and creates monthly schedule for OR and Rad tech personnel
- Observes and ensures performance competencies of OR nurses and techs, conducts new hire orientation and training; acts as a mentor and resource for staff while ensuring policy and procedure is followed
- Promotes harmonious relations and favorable attitudes among the healthcare team
- Communicates with surgeons and sales reps to determine what equipment and resources are needed for specific cases
Additionally, this position will routinely perform the duties of a circulating nurse and scrub in for cases. Those duties include and are not limited to:
- Patient assessments including vital signs, documenting nursing history, notifying physician to changes, reactions, or significant incidents
- Initiating a patient education plan according to the individual patient needs, developing a plan of care based on assessment data and implement admission care
- Prepare rooms, sterile instruments, inventory supplies
- Aids physicians during surgical procedures confirm proper technique according to accepted standard of practice
- Responds to life saving situations based upon nursing standards, policies, and procedures; maintain awareness of comfort and safety
Requirements
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & CREDENTIALS MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Nursing degree from an accredited school
- Two (2) years’ experience as a circulating nurse
- Current RN license in Tennessee
- BLS certification
PREFERRED
- Prior experience working in a surgery center
- Experience as a charge nurse
- ACLS certification
- Neurological or Orthopedic experience is a plus
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word), electronic medical records (EMR) and medical practice software
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to communicates effectively and professionally with patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers
- Ability to comprehend and interpret verbal orders and direction
- Can to think and act quickly, with the ability to make frequent judgments and respond to routine problems
- Excellent organization skills with attention to detail
- Can provide excellent customer service while managing difficult or emotional situations
- High level of confidentiality and discretion
