What are the responsibilities and job description for the Physician Assistant position at Seneca Nation Health System?
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the general administration of the Chief Medical Officer, the Physician’s Assistant (PA) collaborates and is accountable to the Physician for patient medical assessment, diagnostic, therapeutic and preventative health care services and for the planning and implementation of the medical regimen for each patient.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assesses physical and psycho-social health status through a detailed medical history and comprehensive physical examination.
2. Responsible for the development and implementation of patient management plans.
3. Initiates requests for laboratory and diagnostic tests.
4. Interprets routine diagnostic studies such as common laboratory, radiology and electrocardiographic tracings and other routine diagnostic procedures used to identify pathophysiologic processes.
5. Conducts routine procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care, management of simple conditions produced by infections or trauma, assisting in the management of more complex illnesses and injuries and taking initiative in performing the evaluation and therapeutic procedures in response to life threatening situations.
6. Provides instruction and counseling of patients regarding compliance with prescribed therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living and health maintenance issues.
7. Facilitates referrals of patients to other health related practitioners and/or SNHS services when appropriate.
8. Records patient’s progress in electronic health record (EHR) in order to plan program management and therapy appropriate to patient’s needs.
9. Issues prescriptions under the direction of supervising Physician. May prescribe Schedules II-VII.
10. Promotes cooperative staff efforts with Nurses, Physicians, Care Collaboration Unit and other allied health professionals to provide and maintain high quality patient care service.
11. Maintains patient files according to program guidelines and the Privacy Act of 1974.
12. Participates and completes all mandatory staff meetings, trainings and in-services.
13. Promotes and participates with PCMH policies and procedures.
14. Follows all policies and procedures of the department, Seneca Nation, and SNHS
15. Adheres to agreements set forth in employment contract.
16. Participates and cooperates in the re-credentialing process with the Contracting and Credentialing Coordinator.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
· Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span
· Ability to assess patients’ status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age-specific needs.
· Good communication skills.
· Ability to work with providers, nursing and staff from all departments.
· Good organizational skills.
· Computer knowledge, EHR experience, required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Satisfactory completion of license-qualifying or Accreditation Review Commission for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) approved program. For a program for the training of a Physician Assistant to be determined substantially equivalent to a licensure-qualifying or accredited program, it must:
o Have at least 32 semester hours of classroom work; and
o Have at least 40 weeks (1,600 clock hours) of supervised clinical training.
· Must pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) that is administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
· Current New York State Physician Assistant licensure in good standing.
· Must have active DEA registration certificate.
· Must pass a pre-employment drug screen in accordance with the Drug, Alcohol and Controlled Substance Abuse policy.
· Experience in a large hospital, academic medical center, outpatient health care setting, or Indian Health Service (IHS)/tribal health, preferred.
· Must have current CPR certification.
