What are the responsibilities and job description for the Yard Driver/ Shop Assistant position at Seneca Tank?
Summary:
Reporting to the Branch Manager Des Moines Location. The incumbent is responsible for organizing the yard, driving tanker trucks and trailers on and around the yard to maintain a steady workflow for mechanics, washing and/or detailing tank trucks, trailers, and lube vans (units); receiving, stocking, and preparing parts/parts kits to be used in the shop. The job holder is also responsible for maintaining the physical environment of the Des Moines Branch shop and performing grounds maintenance duties as needed. The job holder also picks up and delivers parts to/from local vendors and performs routine delivery of trucks and trailers between facilities.
Supervisory Responsibility
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Job Functions:
Driving
- Drive petroleum tank trucks and trailers on public roadways and within private/company parking areas to transport for repair, resale-refurbishment, washing, and fueling.
- Maintaining an organized lot to ensure safe and productive storage of trucks and trailers while maintaining productive work-flow.
Detailing
- Wash tanks and chassis in preparation for unit-building process and unit delivery to customer by applying cleaning fluids and sealants with brushes and pressurized sprayers.
- Detail chassis interiors by performing tasks such as vacuuming carpet, applying vinyl protectant, and washing windows.
Shop and Grounds Maintenance
- Perform custodial and grounds maintenance duties including emptying trash receptacles, cutting up/disposing of cardboard, sweeping floors and discarding debris/scrap metal, disposing of pallets, operating floor scrubber, removing snow and ice from business premises using manual and motorized tools and equipment.
Pick Up and Delivery
- Pick up parts and supplies ordered from local vendors and deliver to Production Warehouse.
- Deliver parts and components from Production Warehouse to local customers.
Parts Preparation
- Assemble parts kits with prescribed item types/quantities maintaining minimum kit inventory requirements at all times.
- Cut metal pieces to specified lengths using plate shearing tool, and move to proper storage locations.
- Apply sealant to clamps and paint wooden tank seals.
Receiving and Stocking
- Restock parts, wire, air tubing (Synflex), and hydraulic hose carts, as well as miscellaneous fastener compartments in work bays with specified items and quantities, daily.
- Stock parts received in proper storage locations in warehouse.
Lift Operation
- Operate travel lift to transfer tanks between delivery trucks, temporary holding carts, and new-unit chassis.
Competencies
Must have a Class A CDL with a tanker endorsement, a Hazmat endorsement is a plus.
Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, and standards related to area of responsibility.
Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
Knowledge of petroleum tank truck operation and maintenance, as well as traffic rules and regulations.
Knowledge of proper mechanical functioning of petroleum tank trucks.
Ability to detect and diagnose mechanical problems with petroleum tank trucks.
Ability to act with professionalism in communicating with internal and external customers.
Knowledge of requisite driver capabilities and restrictions for repairing units.
Job requires being reliable, responsible, dependable, punctual, and fulfilling obligations.
Ability to know one's location in relation to the environment or to know where other objects are in relation to oneself.
Equipment and Software
Equipment: Hand and power tools such as screwdriver, wrench, and electric drill, travel lift, 2-way radio, landline/cellular telephone, shovel, snow blower, salt-spreader, and pickup/tractor-mounted plow
Software: Email application
Safety
Follow U.S. Department of Transportation (D.O.T) regulations regarding petroleum tanks, as well as the policies found in Seneca Tank's Safety Manual.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
5 years of experience driving a straight truck or semi tractor
Must meet and maintain Company insurability standards
Must possess and maintain Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker and air brake endorsements
Must possess and maintain current D.O.T. Medical Examiner's Certificate
