Position Overview : The Executive Chef in a Senior Living community is responsible for overseeing all aspects of food service operations, including menu creation, food preparation, and the management of kitchen staff. This position ensures that meals are nutritious, delicious, and served in a safe, efficient, and appealing manner, all while maintaining high standards of quality and compliance with health regulations. The Executive Chef will work closely with residents, families, and staff to create a positive dining experience that aligns with the dietary needs and preferences of senior residents.

Key Responsibilities :

Menu Planning & Development :

Develop nutritious, well-balanced menus that cater to residents' dietary restrictions, preferences, and cultural needs (e.g., low-sodium, low-sugar, vegetarian, etc.).

  • Collaborate with dietitians and other health professionals to ensure meals meet all required nutritional guidelines.
  • Plan seasonal menus and ensure variety to keep meals interesting and enjoyable for residents.

Food Preparation & Cooking :

Oversee and participate in daily meal preparation, ensuring all food is cooked to perfection and served at optimal temperatures.

  • Maintain high standards of food quality, taste, and presentation.
  • Ensure food portions are in line with dietary requirements.
  • Staff Management :

    Hire, train, and supervise kitchen staff, including cooks, dishwashers, and other culinary employees.

  • Ensure all kitchen staff follow proper food safety and sanitation procedures, maintaining a clean and organized kitchen.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback and training to staff.
  • Health & Safety Compliance :

    Ensure the kitchen adheres to all health, safety, and sanitation regulations (including food storage and handling practices).

  • Monitor the cleanliness and safety of kitchen equipment and utensils.
  • Ensure that all food items are prepared, stored, and served in compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Budget & Inventory Management :

    Manage food and supply inventory, including ordering and tracking deliveries.

  • Control food costs, minimize waste, and work within the established budget.
  • Keep accurate records of food inventory and supplies.
  • Resident & Family Interaction :

    Engage with residents and their families to ensure satisfaction with meals and address any dietary concerns or requests.

  • Develop and maintain a good rapport with residents, ensuring they feel heard and valued in terms of their dining experience.
  • Organize special meal events or themed dinners to enhance the dining experience for residents.
  • Quality Assurance :

    Regularly assess food quality and presentation and implement improvements as necessary.

  • Monitor resident feedback and make adjustments to menus or meal preparation techniques accordingly.
  • Qualifications :

  • Education : A culinary degree or equivalent experience in a professional kitchen, preferably with training in nutrition and food safety.
  • Experience : At least 5 years of experience in food service, with at least 2-3 years in a leadership or supervisory role, preferably in a senior living or healthcare setting.
  • Skills :
  • Strong knowledge of dietary needs for seniors and ability to prepare specialized meals.

  • Expertise in food safety, sanitation, and kitchen operations.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Certifications :
  • ServeSafe certification (or equivalent) in food safety required.

  • Additional certification in nutrition, geriatrics, or senior living food services is a plus.
  • Physical Demands :

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods, and work in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
  • Ability to safely use kitchen equipment such as stoves, ovens, knives, and other tools.
  • Work Environment :

  • Work is typically performed in a commercial kitchen and dining areas of a senior living community.
  • Flexible hours may be required to accommodate special events, weekends, and holidays.
  • Compensation :
