Overview
An independently owned New York-based real estate investment management firm is seeking a Tax Manager. The Tax Manager is part of a team of approximately seven (7) tax professionals and is part of the Corporate accounting / financial reporting group.
Responsibilities : What You'll Do :
In this role you will work with management on tax planning and organization issues for this closely held business. In addition, preparation of complex quarterly estimates and analysis of state and foreign withholdings are part of the regular responsibilities.
Most federal, state and local tax returns are processed in house for Real Estate Investment Trusts managed by Sentinel, partnerships, C and S corporations and tax-exempt entities. In this role, you will address and oversee federal and state tax correspondence and audits directly with the taxing authorities and also work with inside legal counsel on matters related to formation and dissolutions / withdrawals of new entities.
Responsibilities include :
- Prepare and review federal, state and local income tax returns for various funds, as well as all the matters pertaining to such compliance (i.e. notices, audits, government inquiries, estimates, investor related matters).
- Assist staff on inquiries both technical as well as administrative
- Supervise staff with shared responsibility on compliance of specific funds
- Research of fund related inquiries and planning projects
- Preparation and research on topics related to
- Federal, state and local taxation for REITS, partnerships, corporations, exempt entities and apportionment rules for multilevel structures,
- REIT qualifications, administration, testing, quarterly checklists, UBTI / ITSI etc.,matters related to foreign investors in any fund structure, including analysis of W-8 series forms and tax treaty interpretations, etc.
- Directly communicate with other departments within Sentinel in order to assess nexus, level of reportable activity in each jurisdiction and application of taxation rules to the financials as prepared for reporting purposes
- Review of compliance performed by the lower-level staff and hands-on training and support during the preparation process
- Review of the capital expenditure updates and of the applicable tax depreciation methodology
- Year-end related planning and provisions (i.e. E&P analysis, final determination of annual distribution requirements, 1099's / 1042s / 8804 / 8805s etc.).
