Title: Summer Academy Instructor (Math or ELA)

Reports To: Senior Manager of Teaching and Learning

FLSA: Part-time, Seasonal

Location: Guilford County, North Carolina (Remote)

Dates: Asynchronous Training in June; Orientations: June 8, 15, and 22; Synchronous Instruction: July 5 - August 3, 2023.

Compensation: $500 stipend for asynchronous training, $40/hr for 34 standard flex hours per week

About SEO Scholars

SEO Scholars is a non-profit focused on improving educational outcomes for students that come from underserved and historically underrepresented backgrounds. Our free eight-year academic program gets low-income public high school students to and through college–with a 100% college admissions rate and 90% college graduation rate. For 60 years, SEO has been an innovator in education and mentorship programs. We are on a mission to create an ecosystem of excellence in which our students can achieve their full potential.

Instructors will join SEO’s community of passionate educators to implement a rigorous college prep curriculum for motivated and driven high school students. Using our original curriculum and a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, instructors play an integral part in supporting our Scholars’ journeys to a competitive college and beyond. Instructors promote depth of understanding and skill acquisition by serving as a coach and facilitator of learning. Summer Academy Instructors teach either Math or ELA for rising 10th Graders in Guilford County, NC.

SEO Guilford County is a 100% online program via Zoom. Scholars will engage in synchronous learning with the academic leadership and support of our Instructors.

The Courses:
Instructors will be hired as either an ELA or Math Instructor for our Rising 10th Graders:

Math Instructors:
The Summer Academy course is “Graphs and Relationships”

ELA Instructors:
The Summer Academy course is “Voice and Identity in Fiction”

Both Math & ELA Instructors may teach 1 Identity & Empowerment course:

The Summer Academy course is “Exploring Racial, Ethnic, and National Identities”

Key Responsibilities:
Online Instruction & Facilitation – Teach four to five periods including either Math or ELA, and Identity & Empowerment; occasionally co-facilitate with an Associate Instructor. Follow provided lesson plans and meet lesson objectives, abiding by SEO’s articulated criteria for rigorous instruction and student engagement. Hold Scholars to high expectations, use protocols for student-driven discussion and group work, and promote depth of understanding via questioning. Zoom video-conferencing will be used to provide online, synchronous instruction in all classes.
Navigate Instructional Technologies – Learn and efficiently utilize our instructional technologies such as Zoom (video conferencing and chat), Brightspace (Learning Management System), Nearpod, Desmos (for Math Instructors), and GSuit applications.
Content Preparation – Read, internalize, and practice all lesson plans and materials provided by SEO prior to teaching. Implement thoughtful adjustments to pacing and activities based on specific student needs.
Grading and Record-Keeping – Calculate grades according to rubrics and stipulations in provided lesson plans. Provide actionable, growth-oriented feedback to students. Complete all grading in a timely manner and keep the electronic gradebook up to date on Brightspace (our LMS).
Classroom Culture – Project an energetic, engaging, and approachable persona to promote students’ connection to the content, investment in the learning experience, and positive relationship to all members of the community.
Collaboration with SEO Staff and Other Instructors – Plan and work alongside an Associate Instructor to build optimal experiences for Scholar learning in co-teaching and/or single instruction models. Attend all scheduled meetings, professional development trainings, check-ins, and debriefs and respond to all emails and Zoom chats in a timely manner.

Weekly Hours and Compensation:
Self-Guided Asynchronous Training: 10hrs to be completed before Orientation
Instructor Orientations: 06/08, 5:30-7:30 pm; 06/15, 5:30-6:30 pm; 06/22, 5:30-7:00 pm
Instruction: 07/05-08/03

New Instructional staff will complete Asynchronous Training that equates to 10 hours of work, receiving a $500 completion stipend. This can be completed on your own time and will be completed prior to orientation in early-mid June.

The Instructors are allotted 34 hours per week during their seasonal employment, made up of Standard and Flex Hours.

Standard Hours are when the instructor must be working synchronously with staff or students
Monday-Thursday, 9:00am-1:30pm
Friday Professional Development, 2 hours
4.5 Hours a day, 4x a week 2 Hours PD = 20 Standard Hours per week.
Flex Hours make up the additional “instructor work” educators know go into the job. This is time spent preparing for the lesson, grading, entering gradebook data, writing Scholar feedback, communicating with staff and Scholars, etc. These are hours put in outside of the required schedule and can be completed asynchronously throughout the week.
14 Flex Hours allotted per week.

Qualifications:
Required:
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in content related field
Educator or youth-development work with high school-aged students
Online Course Facilitation Experience
Comfortable with and skilled at working with and navigating technological learning systems
Understanding and practice of student-centered pedagogy
Expertise and depth of knowledge in English Language Arts, writing, and reading skills OR Advanced high school-level Mathematics (Algebra & Trigonometry)

Preferred:
Secondary Education Degree and high school teaching experience
Knowledge and experience with Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Certifications, PD course completions, and/or tertiary education in Instructional Technologies
At least 2 years of Online Learning (or e-learning) Instruction, other than Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT)
North Carolina resident with teaching experience in NC schools.

Online Course Technology Facilitator - Create an online learning environment that is conducive to student engagement and participation. This includes fostering a sense of community, promoting collaboration and discussion among students, and providing opportunities for active learning.

The Hiring Process:
Phase 1: Application review
Phase 2: Phone Screening with Talent Acquisitions
Phase 3: 1 Hour Interview & Demo Lesson with the Teaching & Learning team. You will receive an SEO synchronous online learning lesson plan for either Math or ELA to prepare for a Demo Lesson.
Phase 4: Update on Application and/or offer letter sent.

Future Opportunities:
There are potential instructional opportunities for Fall and Spring semesters (Saturday Academy and evening hours).
